There is a big chance it becomes more effective and historically important in the long run

So many critiques of Obama going back many years, but this “aw shucks we gotta be better guys” persona is probably the most sickening

Big agree. The show quality has been inversely proportional to the amount of steroids Alan shoved into his distorted body.

3 has moments of tension, sure, but I don’t think it was “good”

It’s the difference between “Jesus teaches us we must bring compassion, at the tip of our army’s sphere” to “empathy is bad, immigrants are vermin, Trump is sent by God.” The former is bad religious interpretation; the latter feels to me like worshiping a different, evil deity.

Obviously it’s many things - like any other group. Evang’s aren’t a monolith. But it’s started to sour quite a bit even since the W years, to the point of many openly rejecting things like indiv gospel stories.

I’m not denying that at all. I’m questioning whether those religious goals - the literal religious content of what they believe - is recognizably Christian in any way, and I do not believe it is, but rather I find it closer to the worship of something else.

Well, with due regard for inconsistent beliefs that all people hold, I just find it increasingly difficult to reconcile evangelical support for Trump with hypocrisy or willful blindness. That leaves only conclusion that many/most worship something else, and some are starting to virtually admit it

Not exaggerating when I say that a very large number of evangelicals understand that they don’t worship God or Jesus (despite using those names) but rather worship another deity who historically goes by several names.

I just want politicians to understand if you want the United States to still meaningfully exist in the future. That they are going to have to spend the bulk of the 2030s DeNazifying the American state and it’s going to be a generational project

"Hey Prof, do you think that given the structure of online mass media the algos promote this kind of car-crash engagement content which unscrupulous creators (female and male) then seize on to make money, thus injecting what is tantamount to social and political poison into the cultural milieu?"

Came here to say Mariah who never really used it to its potential, honestly

I think helmet laws make it less likely that more people ride bikes and just entrench car dependency.

Data would be helpful here, but I don't think the only data point of relevance is "number of head injuries on bikes"
johncastiglione.bsky.social
I have so many legitimate questions about all of this that I'd love to ask a polysci comm prof if I happened to know any, and so few of them do I want to ask on a public website. So gross.
johncastiglione.bsky.social
I am actually anti-bike helmet! I think helmet laws (or even strong norms) discourage biking, some intentionally so, especially in urban settings. IMO.
johncastiglione.bsky.social
I think there's a lot more to it than that, but it's probably part of it. Poisoned fruit of the poisoned tree.

I thought about Carnegie, but I might even look to actual villains--even they didn't WANT to be seen that way! Like, genteel southern slaveholders or King Leopold or whoever.

It's much more aesthetically Charles Manson than anything else, honestly. A wild-eyed (drugged) giddiness to scare people.

1. Probably not they are liars it's probably drugs

2. They actually blame some genetic condition making it impossible for his body "identify and detoxify mold" which btw is not a real thing!

I want 10,000 words longform on how these drug-addled creeps have all openly embraced literal villainy. Like, the most clownish form of "I want to look evil." This feels different than a lot of their historical predecessors!
