Belated AABC 2025 conference photos from Bradford Cathedral. The varying tooling patterns between different faces of the stones in the 20th century extension probably distracted/upset me more than it should.

Okay I have like... twenty minutes but a lot of y'all noted the church on yesterday's house so, let's talk about deconsecration! I will end the thread with some fun church conversions currently for sale, as little a treat
I mainly wonder if there is a special procedure to deconsecrate a church. And what’s the advantage over just leaving it consecrated

Tomorrow Leicester Cathedral open their new Heritage and Learning Centre. The culmination of years of work and renovations.

On Sunday, my newsletter Church Climbing will come out with stories of my many visits to the Cathedral over the years of closure and construction.

Assorted pictures from the SPABs Repairs of Old Buildings course from last week. A mix of lectures and site visits to live sites. Lectures on materials by masons, specialist brickwork contractors and timber conservation specialists of particular value. Now to decode some of my handwritten notes.

1/ Aneurin Bevan, born on this day in 1897. As Labour's Minister of Health and Housing, 1945-51, he built 805,000 council houses whilst insisting on high standards: homes were one-third bigger than the pre-war average, a three-bed home had two inside toilets.

Southwell minster looking handsome in the sunshine today. Never noticed the sort of wave form dentils (?) on the parapets. I'm assuming they're the same age as a lot of the quite fruity earlier norman/Romanesque relief patterns but could easily be wrong. I could also look it up, but.

The government has deliberately timed these disgusting roundups to coincide with the local elections, because they think you want this. Show them you don’t. By all means intervene or protest if you are able. And whatever else you do, turn up to vote against these absolute bastards.
Aaand We've gone full fash. It is your ABSOLUTE DUTY to intervene, obfuscate, annoy, delay or otherwise frustrate any Border Fash operations you see happening. Especially if you have white/middle class/middle wealth/other usable privileges.
