Back again cuz I heard an album that commanded my attention and demanded to be talked about! Chicago singer and producer keiyaA has dropped a phenomenal record in hooke's law, a vulnerable and forward-thinking work. "devotions" is arresting and has stayed on my mind, so I wrote about it. Read on.

Less third spaces. Going outside costs $800. Everything is designed for extracting money. I'm so tired, man.
After the recent joy of Hard Boiled in a packed theater it hit me that one of the tragedies of capitalism’s manifestation of our tech age is that on top of imprisoning us in gilded cages disconnected from shared reality, they are transforming communal experience into an expensive, uncommon novelty.
James Gunn says theatrical releases are “incredibly important” for DC after the Warner Bros & Netflix merger news

“The communal theatrical experience is something that is incredibly important & remarkably well suited to our big spectacle films”

a once respectable news outlet partnering with this kind of predatory sleaze is such a signal that we are truly abandoned on the sea of misinformation, wholly on our own against truly malign forces that are determined to make us as ignorant and angrily opinionated as possible because it's lucrative

Like, surely it’s obvious that the purpose of collective society is to provide welfare. That’s the whole deal. The whole reason we cooperate. Or do anything together at all. For increased security. Greater overall quality of life. Money & resources are there. There’s no excuse for our current state.

I can't stop thinking about the purported drug smugglers being murdered by the US military. The punishment for drug offenses isn't the death penalty. This is just bloodlust and men in suits playing with lives they don't care about. It's truly grotesque and gravely compromises this country.

Genuinely terrifying news. Still needs approval from the FTC but the fact that a merger of this magnitude is feasible doesn't speak well on the longevity of antitrust laws in entertainment
Netflix confirms it will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO, for about $82.7 billion, after separation of Discovery Global (which is expected to be completed in Q3 2026).

There are so many people living lives of quiet dignity despite horrific medical news or poverty or tragedy where every day they still wake up and try to be good people in the world even as the world pushes against them and it makes me even angrier at the absolute shitheads that rule over things

What are we doing here folks
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

If there’s one thing you’d think Congress could do without controversy, it’s renaming post offices.

But this week, a House committee quietly pulled Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton’s bill to rename one in Brookland for Chuck Brown, D.C.’s godfather of go-go.

@maustermuhle.bsky.social has the story:
Wilson Building Bulletin: The Chuck Brown post office is no-go
Also: D.C. gets no deference from Congress, and there won't be a referendum on the tipped wage (though the fight isn't over)

“the USPS must turn a profit” makes me want to set things on fire

they put a clause in the fucking constitution about postal service, that’s how important it is

nothing in there about “only if you can make money on it”
🚨SCOOP: Amazon is preparing to sever ties with USPS and expand its shipping network as a true coast-to-coast rival.

It could cost USPS more than *$6 billion* a year in lost revenue, and lead Amazon to dominate yet another facet of the economy.
