Theaters. Hiking. Oakland. Movies - these days a lot of horror and a lot of '40s and '50s (and often '40s and '50s horror).

Thank you @andrewpope.bsky.social for this break down. Last year, The Substance was waving the horror banner proudly during award season. We’re hoping it’s a start for the genre to break through the barriers- again (since Get Out).
Horror quietly took over the 2026 Oscars race:

1. SINNERS sits as a broad-spectrum near-lock
2. WEAPONS has a genuine acting shot
3. FRANKENSTEIN is breaking out from its craft base

This might be the broadest horror awards year in decades. Here’s how the odds look.
The Year Oscar Went Horror: How Sinners, Weapons and Frankenstein are heading to the 2026 Oscars
This year’s horror race isn’t a wave but three separate paths: Sinners as the awards-season heavyweight, Weapons as the tension-driven craft play, and Frankenstein as the technical powerhouse now e…

Brett Ratner is a creep, who has been accused of sexual misconduct and sexual harassment by 7 people, including Olivia Munn, Natasha Henstridge, and Elliot Page. We covered him in season 4 of @whatacreep.bsky.social. It should be no surprise that Predator Trump is a big fan.
I teased this last night in What I’m Hearing but now confirmed: Paramount WILL release Rush Hour 4 after prodding from Trump on behalf of Brett Ratner. Distribution deal. Producer Tarak Ben Ammar is lining up financing. Get ready for the dumbest possible state-controlled media.

Stunned to learn this news. Udo Kier’s filmography is undeniable, but his place as an out, queer figure in genre was, in a word, crucial. Uniquely eccentric and truly monolithic. Absolutely one of a kind.
Udo Kier has passed away at 81. A singular screen presence, Kier had a long history in the horror genre, starring in films including Mark of the Devil, Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula, Blade, Feardotcom, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and Dario Argento's Mother of Tears.

I mean, I'd boycott Walgreens but they've made it easy by one-by-one closing stores in all my bustling neighborhoods.
Is this good? It doesn't seem good.

Step 1 in the complicated process of rebooting/reintroducing James Bond to an audience that saw the last James Bond movie is having the new person playing James Bond introduce himself as, "Bond. James Bond," early in his first movie. There is no Step 2. From there, just make a good James Bond movie.
If you're having trouble sorting out the continuity of James Bond, that suggests to me that you do not understand the enduring appeal of James Bond. Continuity is not that franchise's strong suit. It's been soft rebooted repeatedly, and everyone understands. Dumb People Problems.

This is what I try to always tell people: food banks can do way more with your money than you can, due to bulk buying deals. And they can do way, way more with your money than with the canned goods you didn’t want to eat
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

How is this weird? This was just growing up -- I'd think any of my friends and I can say we did all of these (except maybe 9, though we definitely owned and listened to them)
I did all of these, but 9 only as a joke. I once put a Sony Sports boombox on top my car tho, and drove away before noticing, and it fell off (it was ok).

I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”
