Oh, FFS.

The reason for protections like this is that, because of past discrimination and other (related) social/structural barriers, people of color have generally had less opportunity to accrue seniority in the first place.
The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Minneapolis Public Schools on Tuesday, alleging a provision in the district’s union contract shielding teachers of color from seniority-based layoffs is discriminatory and violates the Civil Rights Act.

We need more people who ask themselves how they can put Fred Rogers' words into actions.
I’m running for Congress because we need leaders who will fight, not fold. I recognize this moment, and I’m ready to meet it. #FightDontFold #LanderForNYC #LanderForCongress

Imo most SLACs have lost or given up the comparative advantages they had over bigger schools:
- you don't really get more attention from a professor if they have a 4/3 load. Because all the time they "save" from a lower research load is going to other students.
- upper level classes aren't smaller

Even if we would stipulate that the *only* purpose of college is vocational training (ugh) if you think you, at 18 years old, not only know for sure what your future career will be but also know better than all the professors at a college what skills you will need for that career, why bother?

To be clear, my own view, for what it's worth, is that people should be supported to do whatever works best for them and the kid, taking into account all relevant considerations, not just some studies that don't take into account the realities of people's lives.

Another neat fact: all wobbegong pups are above average.
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

I only just realized that Fan Ho lived till 2016.

I have mostly looked at his work from the 1950s. During the 60s, Ho began a filmmaking career. A whole other life.

Wer jetzt allein ist, wird es lange bleiben,
wird wachen, lesen, lange Briefe schreiben

This is a happy thought, but as the person interviewed said, I’ll believe it when I see it. You also have to keep in mind that the Chief of Police doesn’t actually run the Minneapolis Police Department. The police union president does. And the police union is fucking racist.

I think a lot of "learn to code" people thought high salaries for programmers were a permanent feature of the world rather than the result of unusual circumstances around supply and demand in the labor market. Over last 20 years, CS went from a niche college major to the most popular major in the US
New CS grads are making less than I made as an accounting graduate straight out of college a decade ago, and I don’t mean inflation adjusted, I mean nominally.
