If a Psych prof assigns students an essay response paper with explicit guidelines and then flunks a student for turning in a paper that ignores those guidelines but instead makes vague gestures to "the Bible" then THAT IS NOT A VIOLATION OF THE STUDENT'S RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

Like, very obviously, many things have improved! My kids get accommodations in school that would have been unthinkable in the 90s! Gay marriage is, right now, legal! If you spend all day thinking about how much worse things are you're basically talking yourself into being a reactionary

I remind myself that their demolition has been anything but surgical.

They have ripped out a lot of the Jenga blocks that upheld the old order.

This is a moment of profound danger but also unprecedented opportunity, depending on how we rebuild after things break.

People *want* to learn. It's just also terrifying

But if you've ever met a kid who just learned what three times one million is and you ask them the question, you know that the power of knowledge is a helluva drug

"the kids are dumb and lazy" is never true, has never been true, and will never be either true or useful as a thing to tell yourself to let yourself off the hook as an instructor

"Frustrated," sure. "Unmotivated," sometimes. "Overwhelmed," fine. "Undisciplined," me too on occasion.
"Lost," yup!
November 29, 2025 at 4:52 PM
Okay, I've read more of the quotes and replies and like...idk y'all as the instructor in charge of the class, I feel like it's incumbent on me to critically reflect on the structure of the course and how it generates what goes down with the students.

It's our classroom! It's on us!
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
November 29, 2025 at 1:18 PM
Again I don't agree that this is what "more accessible" means, which I think should be "devastatingly easy to *start*"

But if you can construct a skill/challenge ramp that has a sufficiently compelling feedback loop, I think the challenge level at the end can be substantial
Admin are continually pressuring us to make the course "more accessible," by which they mean "devastatingly easy to complete," but it's not about access. Many students refuse to read or write in any capacity that isn't tech-aided, no matter how simple the assignment, no matter how process-based.
November 29, 2025 at 1:01 PM
This person didn't ask for advice so I'm QTing in case this is of use:

I talk with students about how if they *hate* something that makes sense bc they're not any good at it, and people like what they're good at.

We talk about how they got good at the things they are good at, then we start to
I don't know how to teach students who hate reading/writing, when reading/writing are the foundations of what I'm supposed to teach. Yes, I engage with audio technologies, digital narratives, cinema, material culture...but it's all forms of reading. I just don't know what they want out of this.
November 29, 2025 at 12:58 PM
The quotes/replies here really show how we're in a pickle we can't resolve until we fix the distribution of income and political power

It's penny-ante bullshit but it points to much much bigger problems that can't be fixed by kicking a robot, but still make people understandably want to
Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

Advent starts Sunday!! As a devout UU, I'm so grateful for all the ways "making ready" for hope and love gets to be celebrated. Making food, bringing in wood to warm the cold and light the darkness, wrapping gifts with love.

I love the anticipation; if you've got a favorite tradition, plz share!

last year, this community turned the most consumerist day of the year into a day defined strangers saying "I got you" to people that really need a bright spot in their life.

it's time to run it back.

Part of why this stuff keeps getting underreported is that our media class can’t get it through their thick heads that this is not a weightless debate over political ideology, but a declaration of war on over 100 million Americans, which DHS is announcing an intent to eliminate

I get this but my favorite power that I possess is my deep capacity to Not Give A Shit What People I Don't Know Think Of Or Call Me

Anyone can associate me with whoever they want, fuck if I care
I don’t like being referred to as a Yankee but I’ve realized this is not at all because I’m Southern, but because I specifically resent being associated with traditional New England Protestant culture and its flavorless foods
All people from the U.S. are Yankees. I say this as a person born and raised in The South because pissing off That Specific Kind of Southerner is a moral good.

This and also margin doesn't matter v much

If a baseball team wins the world series in extra innings in game seven they call them the world series champions

Mamdani will be the mayor of New York

If you earn more than 50.1% of the vote you conceded more than you had to
the credible thing to say here is that you can't take much away from this because of the circumstances, but even that seems wildly unfair to how Mamdani came from a protest candidate to mayor in less than a year

This is both true and also so weird to me in that I have a deeply internalized "what kinda man cares what other people think constantly?" impulse.

Ironic, but nonetheless liberating
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.
November 26, 2025 at 6:40 PM
I don't like this and don't do it (I prefer to ignore norms but if I do end up caring, I like when people follow my preferences without them knowing I had anything to do with it)

I fully agree with this post
I think one of the things that I have pissed the most people off across the most social contexts, over decades, is asserting a fairly simple claim: people who spend a great deal of time and energy policing/defining social norms in a particular setting probably enjoy doing that

Counterpoint: it's fun to argue with strangers about pie as long as everyone is cool
People foisting their pie takes while also making other people feel bad because they like a pie is key Social Derangement Syndrome.

Before social media, we didn’t air our dumb thoughts to everyone. We didn’t face stupid criticism from strangers about the pie we like.

Let people like their pies!
