I am an animal lover.

ICE shot and killed a family dog during a sweep looking for migrants.

Americans, I want you to care about Chop, the dog.

But I want you to care that we live in a Nazi state with white Americans bursting into homes to violently separate families MORE.

Well-informed electorate is a big one!

It's not woke to be educated. The right just says that because an educated electorate naturally rejects authoritarianism and they can't have that!

No, it’s vital for a well trained workforce and a well informed electorate. It’s also not for everybody and shouldn’t be the only goal of a child’s life

I say it all of the time because it's true. On the whole, we aren't brave as individuals. But there's strength in numbers.

you cannot "abuse" your rights.

civil rights either are protected and real or they are not.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson's full statement, in which she says she will sign an EO permitting protest "only at the safety zone located at the ICE facility on Beach Street," is up on the village's website.

"There are too many protesters abusing their right to protest," Thompson says.

Broadview Shrinks Protest Safety Zones

The following statement can be attributed to Village of Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson:

“The protests at the ICE facility on Saturday night degenerated into chaos. There were 15 arrests, and 10 of those were around the age of my own daughter. As a mother and a mayor, I am mad. Broadview didn’t choose to have the ICE facility in our community. But it’s here. And so are Broadview residents. There are too many protesters abusing their right to protest. Too many are raising their fists rather than their voices, creating chaos at the expense of the people who call Broadview home. Broadview residents lack the protestors’ privilege to return to calm, quiet neighborhoods for undisturbed rest.

Therefore, I have issued a new executive order, in consultation with the Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriff, that permits protests only at the safety zone located at the ICE facility on Beach Street.

There will no longer be a designated protest safety zone at 2000 South 25th Avenue between Lexington and Fillmore.

Additionally, it has been only God’s grace alone that a protester has not been struck and killed by a motorist on 25th Avenue given how frequently protesters dash onto this busy, four-lane street. This new
measure will provide for both the serenity of residents and safety of protestors.

As I have repeatedly said, I respect, support, and defend the protesters’ free and – peaceful – speech against the outrageous injustices and deplorable unprovoked chemical arms attacks by ICE agents against American citizens, journalists, and ministers that put Broadview police and firefighters in harms’ way.

Nevertheless, my first priority is to defend public safety and the residents who live here and people who work here. They deserve stability, safety, and respect, a quality of life that is currently being denied to them. They deserve the love and kindness that they expect by being Broadview residents.”

This isn’t care.
This isn’t abolition.
This is enabling violent cops.
Eunisses Hernandez sold out her unhoused constituents.
Her team ordered a sweep, knowing it would bring known sexual predator cops to harass the encampment…just like their last sweep.
No housing.
No replacement tents.
No apology.
Hernandez staffer says he ordered the CARE+ sweep
During the interaction with Ares last Thursday, Kris Rehl, an organizer with mutual aid group LA Street Care, questioned Ares about who scheduled the sweep. Ares confirmed he was the one responsible for scheduling CARE+ operations in Hernandez's office. Upon hearing that, several of the residents responded with surprise, with one seeking confirmation from Ares, asking, "You ordered this Eric?" and another person asking him, "Why?"
Even though residents are usually allowed back after a CARE+ operation, which requires that people leave the area while a cleaning operation takes place, one resident, Claire (pseudonym), told The LA Reporter she did not believe that city officials are going to let them set back up where they had been.
Members of the encampment at that location had submitted a letter to Hernandez's council office in May seeking trash pick-up, port-a-potties, brooms and cleaning supplies and needle disposal. They also demanded permanent housing and said CARE+ sweeps don't clean, but rather destroy their belongings.
As of Sunday, residents had relocated across the street to Hugo Soto-Martinez's 13th District, Rehl told The LA Reporter.

I’d have voted for Warren if she’d have had the chance. There are plenty of black women that I would probably support and vote for. Harris was never on that list.

Again I ask, what qualified her as a progressive presidential candidate? She would have been a Republican in the 80’s.

So much of this!

We were never really free anyway. Not until we wrestle with our past and acknowledge our sins against our own humanity can we have a future of freedom and justice.

We ALL matter, or none of us do!

Y'all ain't getting free until Black people are getting free. Sorry, tough cookies! It's because you hate seeing us free so bad you're in such a pickle.

How was she qualified?

Freshman Senator, a mediocre attorney general who prioritized police over people?

That she was the token VP to make an old white dude seem relatable to a diverse audience?

What did she do that actually made her a good candidate?

We need real leadership, real choices!

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

i am literally never not tapping the "we need to fund public education and open the schools" sign. there is no moment or topic in which the dearth of basic reading comprehension is not a major force preventing any deeper discussion. a lot of people are functionally meat-based LLMs who parrot tokens.

Neoliberals cannot counter fascism because actually countering fascism would put their power, prestige and money at risk as fully dealing with the threat of fascism and white power is a threat to the entire system of governance in most western countries

I truly believe a big reason why Democrats are failing to appropriately respond to the moment is a pathological refusal to admit that there were aspects of the American status quo pre trump that were extremely fucked up and unjust

It's not mutual aid because that person's not part of your community apparently even though you see them online, but why don't people get that we must expand our notion of community & get out of who white capitalism says is it is even to band together to get through our fascist predicament.

It’s about creating community, the kind of community you want to see. Do you want to live in a community where everyone is only interested in themselves, or one that helps its members?
jamiebiver.bsky.social
I am a little curious about this get rich thing, cause we could really use some funding. There is a lot more need in my community than we as a small group can possibly address. That doesn’t stop us from trying to, but resources are always needed.
jamiebiver.bsky.social
It’s a way to be an active part of solutions rather than problems. It takes you away from your comfortable little bubble and into the lives of others. Mutual Aid is an opportunity to help your neighbors and get some perspective on what’s really important at the same time.

A lot of the blame here falls on the Democratic Party, which is (to use a technical term) mad up of pathetic lily-livered cowards who tremble uncontrollably in fear at the idea of any kind of public confrontation with the Trump administration on any issue beyond a self-selected Dull Policy Dispute.

The reason the ICE videos aren’t producing a backlash of that scale (yet) is that our institutional elites are deeply committed to ignoring them, which both reduces their spread and reduces the sense that this is something important we SHOULD be freaking out about.
