It genuinely is not actually hard to condemn the actions of the Israeli state without engaging in blatant, naked gutter antisemitism.

The issue isn't that this is some nuanced and complicated topic, the issue is that people want to do antisemitism because they have discovered bigotry feels good.

Every German I’ve ever met has had a great sense of humour. One particular German, Frank, made the best unintentional joke I’ve ever heard.

I was telling him about how my parents had moved to Spain, and they had a problem with eagles stealing their chickens.

Me: “Yeah, these eagles come down out of the mountains. They steal the chickens right out of the pen!”

Frank: “An eagle?! AN EAGLE DOES THIS?!”

Me: “Yes, they have eagles over there. Mad, isn’t it?”

Frank: “AN EAGLE IS STEALING THE CHICKENS?!”

Me: “Errr, yeah. They’re predators, you know?”

Frank: “THEY ARE PREDATORS?!”

Me: “Yeah, and they fly down and kill the chickens and then fly off with them.”

Frank: “THEY FLY— Wait, hang on… Oh… I see. Err… In German, Igel is… errr…”

There was a long, long pause.

Frank: “AH! IN GERMAN, EIN IGEL IS A HEDGEHOG!”

This joke is funny because it's saying Israelis are fake, rootless people who steal all their culture, see? Not a real ethnicity whose material culture is rooted in their blood and soil. No, some kind of sub-people.

I haven't read the book, but this sounds like it's more about adapting Ashkenazi cuisine to locally-grown ingredients rather than learning Levantine cooking?

While it criticizes European foodways as unhealthy and irrational, few recipes in Meyer's cookbook are rooted in Middle Eastern cuisine; most are European dishes adapted to the contemporary conditions of Palestine. This includes modified versions of goulash, sauerkraut, and a full section on potato dishes, a staple in Eastern European Jewish cooking. She does, however, urge the homemaker to consider replacing potatoes, which were expensive in Palestine, with the more easily accessible rice or bulgur, and likewise substitute olive oil for butter.

These folks are always inclined to go for the shallowest possible reading anyway, & they especially can't resist when they see an opportunity to "prove" that Jews are the real Nazis. It's like catnip to them.

So you can recognize the phrase "blood and soil" as Nazism, but you don't recognize the entire rest of that paragraph as a description of the Nazi beliefs that he's saying this meme was made from? And so you think he's unironically talking up blood-and-soil as a good thing?
