I just gave ivanplis.com some much-needed spring cleaning — after all, the @acesediting.bsky.social conference is coming! Take a look:
This is because English capitalism is a whole different bundle of heresies and demon-conjurings (McCarraher, 2019)
my favorite part of the "the protestant reformation caused a work ethic that caused the industrial revolution and capitalism" theory is that england, the birthplace of capitalism, was not part of the protestant reformation and banned all properly protestant sects

The Jim Henson Company's 70th Anniversary Auction is today. If I had the funds, I would love to expand @ransomcenter.bsky.social's collection of author busts by purchasing these props from The Muppet Christmas Carol.

I appreciate that podcasters need to earn money, but it’s undignified to hear posh old @willdalrymple.bsky.social on Empire singing the praises of business-to-business CRM software or whatever. He should not know what that is! Leave him alone!! The nice lady can handle the late capitalism

this skeet has never seen the inside of the homes of my relatives in Russia
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

As I always like to say, Protestants reinvented the Qur’an from first principles
when people analyze scripture, they assume every sentence is endowed with deep significance not just in terms of the story being told but about the universe and morality, these revelations are inherently true and cannot be questioned because they come from God himself

Is the only truly inclusive winter holiday… Soviet New Year??
Your yearly reminder that “holiday” celebrations that only include Christian traditions are not, in fact, inclusive even if you don’t use the word Christmas, so tbh I’d rather you just say it’s Christmas.
Until a few years ago, ugly holiday sweaters didn’t exist. They’re ugly Christmas sweaters, with some generic Jewish iconography to be “inclusive.” But the truth is, when I have to buy one to wear to a work party, I feel like I’m in another culture’s drag.

Also certain classes of people could self-select into professions that were compatible with florid unmanaged ADHD, in jobs that essentially don't exist anymore.
I keep saying this but it’s at least very interesting that many doctors didn’t think ADHD persisted into adulthood until you couldn’t buy Ritalin over the counter anymore and most people stopped smoking.
yeah tbh I’d really rather be on ADHD meds and NOT have to develop a two pack a day cigarette habit as someone who’s never smoked before just to function

sorry it just occurred to me that this is functionally equivalent of a car-free city dweller complaining that it takes far too long by bus to get to suburban shopping or cultural destinations, which is a 100% legit complaint that would be laughed out of any op-ed page in the country
One thing that’s so frustrating living in a city center is the pervasive belief among suburbanites that your neighborhood is nothing more than a consumer experience for them and that the city should bend over backwards to ensure they can speed as fast as possible on their way to buy treats in it.
