I'm reading the new Social Sciences curriculum content and I wasn't prepared for how sad I would feel. We spent thousands of hours working with the previous iteration and the NZ history content and all that enthusiasm and excitement was just killed for something so bad.

ZB having conniptions... they can see its a vote winner so grasping at straws re those that can afford to go to the Dr being subsidised.

All of us benefit when kids get decent free lunches, free doctors & prescriptions and a proper welfare system for those unable or can't find work.

LAB arent as left as media & RW parties claim. So a start in the correct direction by LAB is welcome. Medical card is nonsense & will eat up any savings, they need to make all GP visits free & ensure more GPs are available in hard to reach areas. Agree GRN & TPM should have bottom lines.

CGT-lite is a starting point and help some NAT voters move leftish. Those of us who want more will vote GRN or TPM. Those living in the past will stick with ACT or NZF.

The lady at the charity shop today told me that she wishes people would clear out their children's old toys in the lead up to Christmas rather than after because she always sees a number of parents in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's very rarely anything in just before, but that they get inundated with toys in the days after.

And it really made me think about it in a way I never would have before. If you know your child is going to get lots of presents from father Christmas this year, by clearing out your cupboards a few days early you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too.

Just thinking if we hadn't cancelled i-Rex we would be taking delivery of 2 new hybrid, future proof ferries soon with two seismic upgraded ports. Imagine #nzpol

Fun fact:

The ferries & much needed seismic ports could have been delivered for 1.4 billion. Instead they threw away 1 billion and deferred it for another 4-5 years, incurring double maintenance costs & leaving us without rail enabled ferries (increased freight costs)

We got I-Rex for 40-50% off market price too and it was future proofed for future volumes vs the Temu version we will get and the slap-over on the ports in seismically active zone.

My gut says we threw much more than it would have cost to finish - and had we not we would be far ahead today (and the ferries coming in a few months vs years)

Also worth noting that our worst paid nurses in New Zealand, the ones whose pay equity claims were thrown in the trash by this government aren't able to join the strike today. But remember that primary health care, aged care and Māori health service nurses stand in solidarity with the strike.

Not an economist, but I do feel discourse around rival political parties’ spending plans would be more productive if we all had a better understanding of the difference between an expense and an investment.
