It is interesting that Trump is posing for a photo with 6 victims of Epstein's sex trafficking operation.

We're completely screwed if our response to measles is going to be asking antivaxxers - the most selfish and stupid people in our society - to voluntarily self-report and quarantine for 21 days each every time they get exposed
More than 250 people who were exposed to measles, including dozens of unvaccinated school-aged children, are quarantining in South Carolina as the state wrestles to contain an outbreak that has sickened more than 110 people.
Hundreds Quarantined in South Carolina as Measles Outbreak Shows No Sign of Slowing
The outbreak shows no signs of slowing, likely because of the affected area’s “lower-than-hoped-for vaccination coverage,” a state health official said.

He went from '1 Billion Americans' to 'we shouldn't have birthright citizenship'. These people are indistinguishable from the likes of Rubio who sold out everything they claimed to believe in so they can grovel at Trump's feet. They'd do the same thing if it means they lead a controlled opposition.

Why did the White Working Class turn on liberalism in the late century? Can’t be bigotry, just Money In Politics

Why did the Iraq War happen? Shadowy conspiracy by Them for profits

Why did Trump get elected twice? Well you just have to understand the economic anxiety of the left behind working man

The last half century has sucked for American politics in a lot of ways and the worst of these is easily the pan-ideological consensus that the gutter bigotry of the worst elements of society must be downplayed, coddled, Listened To And Learned From because it’s just an outgrowth of Something Else

i thought this was such a good piece about exactly this phenomenon. too many liberal commentators lack self-confidence. they engage in endless rounds of ritual self-flagellation that contribute to a sense that liberalism is weak and unwilling to defend itself. bsky.app/profile/dick...
I heartily recommend Jonathan V. Last’s newsletter from last week on this.

George Packer comes in for especial criticism.

Why liberalism romanticizes the Forgotten Man and is reluctant to take its own side in the fight against authoritarianism.

It's very banal but I think the right synthesis here is:
1. moderation has electoral benefits
2. other things also have electoral benefits (incl. getting policy calls right, anticipating shifts in public opinion, generating shifts in public opinion)
3. sometimes there are tradeoffs between 1 and 2
i have no issues with arguing that moderation does have beneficial effects. my issue here is that bazelon and the entire orbit of boosters (like Matt) around him are paying absolutely no attention to what happened to Labour
i've said it before but this is the post that makes me think the centrist strategist wing of American politics is cooked

They're not attracted to women, but so much of performing masculinity is performatively objectifying women. Their lack of attraction is a threat to their masculinity, so they lash out at women who 'aren't hot enough' and the men who are somehow gay because they like women.

Unironically I think a lot of these dudes just aren't straight and are deep in denial. If you find it impossible to be in love with a woman, and believe that someone who is must have a different sexuality from you... you may just be right. Just- the men attracted to women aren't the gay ones.

Trump carried the current version of #VA05 56-43, but it could look a lot different if Democrats convince voters to approve a new map this spring.

Yep, fertility is higher now than it'll ever be. In the long run every country will have sub-Korea birth rates. Nothing will stop this, not the most generous safety nets, not a RVTURN to traditionalism, not the full coercive force of an authoritarian state. All of these have been tried and failed.

Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.

The problem with questioning birthright citizenship in the US context should not be looked at with its economic peers, but its geographic. There’s a historical reason it exists and it underpins the entire state organization in the Western Hemisphere. There exceptions in the WH also tie into that:
