Bingham brings in Charles Sumner’s famous “Freedom National; Slavery Sectional” argument here.

Just in case the message wasn’t entirely clear, Bingham circled back to this theme of birthright citizenship toward the end of his speech.

It is notable that Bingham opened his speech by framing the 14th Amendment as a consequence of a war to throughly vanquish (and atone for) the system of slavery, and he includes in this the principle that “all persons born within the jurisdiction of the United States shall be citizens thereof.”

On Aug 24, 1869, Ohio Rep. John Bingham, principal framer of the 14th amendment, gave a remarkable speech on “Equal Rights-Impartial Suffrage,” in which he said of those who sought to reject the principal of birthright citizenship, “no greater political atrocity than this can possibly be committed.”

We took it for granted back then, but "perchance greatly their superiors in all the attainments and virtues which adorn, or elevate, or ennoble human nature" contains more wokeness than a modern politician will get in his whole lifetime

Big thing that's inspiring about zohran mamdani is that he unapologetically makes the case that immigrants and immigration are great, in a time when the rest of the political class is somewhere between "SECURE THE BORDER" and "KILL THEM ALL"

A future D Secretary of Defense - should one ever come - will need to suspend the clearance of every last person affiliated with a16z, 8VC, Founders, & Sequoia and pull clearances from every portfolio company pending comprehensive drug testing, financial review, & CI screening.

It’s going to hurt.

The notion that economic rationality is non-ideological is, of course, wrong; but that isn’t the form that motivates ideological climate denial, being something altogether more sinister.

We need to develop an understanding that climate denial is first and foremost ideological and not driven by the supposed ‘non-ideology’ of rational self-interest/greed

More generally, we need to understand when they say they will run universities, or governments, or even society itself “like a business”, they do not mean by way of economic interests and short-term profit, but by way of authoritarian make-believe and conspiracisms more real than reality itself

If the Court arbitrarily strikes down this key part of the fourteenth amendment, I think Americans lose any moral obligation to show any allegiance to the laws enforced by a fundamentally lawless regime
Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.

If the court decides to rule against birthright citizenship there is exactly one proper response and it is one that I am not allowed to describe

Suffice to say it’s in the vein of an old East German joke about telephone handsets
The only legitimate judicial response to challenges to birthright citizenship is “what, are you kidding, it’s in the Constitution.”

Though that also was the only possible legitimate response to claims that the president is above the law and cannot face punishment for crimes he definitely committed.

This is no accident, which is why guys like Miller make a point of referring to “descendants” of illegal immigrants, not just children. The idea is that everyone’s citizenship is provisional until the minute your local ICE agent decides otherwise.
No "birthright citizenship" means nobody can prove they are a citizen. If you have any immigrant ancestor and you cannot prove lawful status at that time, even if it was 1830, you citizenship is in doubt.
Take this as far back as you like. The maximal consequence is that everyone must show a chain of citizenship or lawful permanent residency at time of birth for every ancestor to the point of immigration.

A Chinese immigrant named Chaofeng Ge was found hanging with his arms & legs tied behind his back.

Randall Esquivel was deported in a vegetative state & died soon after.

People are being tortured, neglected & disabled.

Abolish ICE & close the camps.
