Drew Struzan (b. 1947 - d. October 13, 2025, age 78) was best known for creating over 150 iconic, hand-painted movie posters during the 1980s and '90s. His distinctive airbrushed-style illustrations defined the look of major movie franchises. Here's a few lesser-known images he did (more: alt text)
Return to Macon County (1975; d. Richard Compton)

A sequel, a small town, and young Nick Nolte, Don Johnson, and Robin Mattson. A Small Town in Texas (1976; d. Jack Starrett)

Timothy Bottoms, Susan George, and Bo Hopkins sweat it out in another small town. Harry and Walter Go to New York (1977; d. Mark Rydell)

James Caan and Elliott Gould star in a 19th century bank heist picture.

Meatballs III: Summer Job (1987; d. George Menduluk)

Patrick Dempsey goes to summer camp. "This will be his year to score!"

Take a few minutes to appreciate Drew Struzan creating the original artwork for THE PHANTOM MENACE. Truly a master at work.

I don't think it would happen here for the same reason but it's funny to remember how economic mismanagement leading to chronic shortages of cooking oil is one of the major factors that sparked the massive protests that doomed Ceausescu.

"We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil" is an all-timer. Thank you Mr President, we appreciate your insights.
Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

I believe that China purposefully not buying our Soybeans, and causing difficulty for our Soybean Farmers, is an Economically Hostile Act. We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil, and other elements of Trade, as retribution. As an example, we can easily produce Cooking Oil ourselves, we don’t need to purchase it from China.

…the hours I spent looking at this VHS art. The richness, the light, the realism. It wasn’t until decades later that I realized the same artist was responsible for so much of the imagery of my childhood. Drew Struzan was singular. I’m grateful for the work he left us.

This is no more lawful than if Iran / North Korea / whoever blew up a couple American yachts in the Mediterranean for suspected drug trafficking. On the legal spectrum it sits in the middle of a Venn diagram between overt acts of military aggression, state-sponsored terrorism, and simple murder.

That Harlem Nights poster is unsung Struzan.

Drew Struzan’s immaculate gift touched every level of studio filmmaking, big and small. Beyond just the classic obvious choices, every corner of his career is riddled with timeless works of art.
Movie poster art for Harlem Nights (1989), DuckTales the Movie (1990), batteries not included (1987) and Taking Care of Business (1990)

D’Angelo’s catalog is filled with classic songs but one of my favorites that doesn’t get talked about much is his scorching cover of Prince’s “She’s Always in My Hair” for the SCREAM 2 soundtrack; a choice needle drop for the opening scene.

RIP the legendary Drew Struzan (1947-2025) 😩

Even though we were expecting the news any day now, it makes me very sad. What an artist.

RIP Drew Struzan. Not just a movie poster artist but a man capable of putting lightning in a bottle, and of taking the form of cinema and encapsulating its spirit in still imagery. The best that will ever do it.

Here are 4 of my favorites:

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

Heartbroken that, per his social media accounts, Drew Struzan has left us. His poster and album art was quite simply shorthand for imagination for countless young people.
E.T. Adventure poster, 1990. I still have one of these hanging in my childhood bedroom. Star Wars Special edition triptych, 1997. I remember seeing all of these in the paper as each film was re-released and just felt a burst of energy those mornings. Hook poster, 1991 Back to the Future poster, 1985
