Today's the day! POPCORN DISABILITIES is out. Due to a variety of factors reviews are in short supply so if you see it out in the wild this week and/or have a review PLEASE post it online (Goodreads, Amazon, etc.) and I'll be sharing them all week!

Many of the people making the art that you love don’t have a lot of reference points outside of the art they make. Some do, but there’s a reason they do what they do and not much else.

So sometimes they say dumb shit. You just have to roll with it, if it’s not offensive to you. (1)

Happy Thanksgiving. You don’t have to believe in the premise of the holiday (I sure as hell don’t), but: you can believe in good friends, the family we choose, and sharing food, happiness, maybe good movies. That’s what Thanksgiving is to me, and the specifics don’t matter. Find joy in each other.

Happy Thanksgiving, American pals.
I love Planes, Trains & Automobiles for many reasons but the main one is for John Candy’s subtle reactions at the end. An ambiguous mix of melancholy & happiness moves across his face & undercuts the overt sentimentality.
What a fine actor he was.

WAKE UP DEAD MAN: The very best of the KNIVES OUT films. @rianjohnson.bsky.social has crafted a masterpiece of a locked room - or locked sacristy - mystery. Josh O’Connor is amazing, Daniel Craig is wonderful, and give Glenn Close her Oscar. Deals with faith, belief, and truth with grace and beauty.

WAKE UP DEAD MAN fucking rips. My only complaint about @rianjohnson.bsky.social's Benoit Blanc movies is that I have to wait three years between each one. They are my favorite running series and I want one every Thanksgiving. Or every other Thanksgiving. The fallaway Catholic in me LOVED this.

Ranking the Benoit Blanc films, for me it’s

WAKE UP DEAD MAN
KNIVES OUT
GLASS ONION

They’re all great, but GLASS ONION is just a little too proud of itself and more clever than smart. WAKE UP DEAD MAN and KNIVES OUT are not that way; they’re never condescending. But WUDM is the best.

I had a great time with Steven (PSYCHO GOREMAN) Kostanski's reimagining of DEATHSTALKER, an absurdly awesome practical effects fantasia and excellent starring vehicle for Daniel Bernhardt (seen here with swamp monster friend).

You'd think QT would remember THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME.

When it comes to QT, you gotta tune him out, enjoy the art for what it is. He's been like this since the beginning.
He’s spectacularly lacking in self-awareness

You got to post bait every once in a while to draw out jerks who slipped past your feed moderations so you can block with impunity. It’s like defending a castle from invaders; there has to be an intentional breach somewhere so that when they come through you can deal with them on your terms.
