But when Scorsese speaks, he speaks from that perspective, and he never claims to be the complete authority. He lets the work speak for him.

That’s why Scorsese is a special kind of artist; he’s one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived, but he also seems like an ordinary guy. Granted, that perspective was earned because his life was tumultuous and he had people around him who loved and supported him through the rough spots.

You have to understand that QT and Cameron and many others live insular lives, and are rarely told no. It takes a special kind of will for people like that to see beyond themselves. So you can ignore what they say a lot of the time, as long as the work is still inspiring to you.

As a lapsed Catholic, this movie truly spoke to me. Not enough to un-lapse myself, but cuts to issues I’ve had with the Church since I was a child, and Rian navigates all of it with true skill and delicacy. WAKE UP DEAD MAN is truly one of the best of the year. I’ll be seeing it again.
