Remember that this is not just a US story but a British one too, because Rachel Reeve wanted to look tough during a press cycle and was too chicken to rise taxes. Which she is now doing anyway
Even in this place, I feel the sheer scale of foreign aid being demolished isn't fully appreciated. As it stands, it is perhaps *the* most catastrophic change to preventable deaths in our lifetimes, and the salience - even in presumably friendly spaces - is basically zero

Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly said “no one has died" because of his government’s decision to gut its foreign aid program.

This is, by far, the most important message in British politics today.

Fair play to you!
It's been with me since I was a baby. A friend of my parents christened me with that for the amount of wriggling and disruption I was creating.
Brave of the Grauniad to be calling out typos...😬

Though I have to admit had to delete & repost this thanks to a typo.

I also reckon you could boost the popularity of ~ any policy with the UK public by adding the prefix “Australian style”.

Australian style national ID cards. Australian style pensions. Australian style healthcare system.

It’s sunnier and they’re better at sport so their policies must be better too.

Israelis and Palestinians have suffered unimaginable trauma. Much of it will never be healed.

But today they can at least begin to hope that their children will go free of this appalling cycle of violence.

Changes to the English language requirement were first reported in May when the government published their early plans in the immigration white paper. The new standard requires people to express themselves “fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expression” and to be able to communicate flexibly in social, academic and work situations.

By autumn 1322, Robert the Bruce held the upper hand. Edward II’s failed invasion of Scotland had ended in famine and retreat, giving Bruce the chance to strike south. In October, his army swept into Yorkshire, where Edward was staying at Rievaulx Abbey. OTD 14 October, the

I really don’t know how a British-Palestinian like @laylamoran.bsky.social, someone so close to and personally affected by everything that happened, finds those reserves of empathy, while people with much less skin in the game take it upon themselves to strike the most strident pose.
As so often, @laylamoran.bsky.social finds gracious, unifying words.

"I choose to believe that peace is possible. Everyone who went on a protest, wrote to their MP, cares about it, shouted at their TV - from whatever point of view - what were those deaths for, if not for a sustainable peace?" ~AA

My Thatcher100 anecdote.

Summer 1998. I am a keen shot and have narrowly squeezed into the GB under-25s rifle shooting and am shortly off to Canada for its annual open competition and the match vs the Canadians.
That is a phenomenal stair balustrade in the mirror.

I find it weird how people can acknowledge that UK politics is volatile to an unprecedented degree and yet talk very confidently about the shape of an election in 2029. Reform is depicted as a permanent and unstoppable force and Labour as utterly doomed. Doesn't add up to me
It's almost exactly four years since Tim Shipman's notorious "Boris Johnson squats like a giant toad" tweet.

Seems like important context given how we often talk as though the next election – four years away – is a done deal.

The hatemonger Rupert Lowe MP wrote a whiny letter to @thebarcouncil.bsky.social complaining about the Black Interns scheme.

Well done Bar Council and Bar Chair for this robust response.
His Tory politics are not mine but I often agree with him and his achievements outside of politics are notable. Imagine pretty much anyone in the current crop across parties building up a major publishing house or having the imagination, & inquiring vision & passion to plant an arboretum.
Missed the first hour so going back in for more punishment #totp
