The inflation of the 1970's and early 80's already produced this: ostentatiosly minimal labeling meant to promise low costs. It was intensely mortifying if your friends saw this stuff in your house.

We've been calling them 'words.'
But here's the thing: that's not quite tadashii.

A kotoba isn't a word.
They're something else entirely-
a role unique to Japanese gengo.
And there's no eigo no kotoba that surus it seigi.

So from ima on, wareware tsukau the hontou no kotoba: kotoba.
Kodansha Manga Academy notice about how editors are no longer editors but henshusha, ironically using a dash where a colon should be, I guess they didn't have a good henshusha

In some slightly unorthodox Ainu-related news, the 2026 "Japan Fursuit Creators’ Competition" concluded last week, with the Artistry Award going to Hokkaido-based maker Subtra for a suit called Tukar (Ainu for seal) - a cat-seal hybrid featuring Ainu motifs.
The rare ト゚ (tu) katakana even appears.

There's a bypass entrance in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, that ends in a loopback if you miss the bypass turnoff. But instead of calling the road a "dead end" in English, it simply says "The End." This is currently amusing pretty much everyone on Japanese social media.
