There’s an essay in which Lindsay Ellis observes that almost all of our modern images of the Nazis are derived from Nazi propaganda, and therefore they’ve all been corrupted by the Nazis’ self-promoting mythology. Most of our images of the American past are the same. They’re from ads, not from life.
I’m fascinated by how many of these schmucks seem determined to return not just to the 50s, but to an imaginary form of the 50s derived from sitcoms. I demand a national screening of the movie Pleasantville!
