Just witnessed a driver in an SUV barely avoid crashing into a person riding a bike downtown because the driver was rushing out of a back alley 😬

If the person riding a bike hadn’t been able to swerve so quickly it would have been a very bad crash! #YEGBike

Perfect day to do a bakery run a stroll through the Downtown farmers market. First outing with my new helmet too!

Oh and shared the bike lane with a lost motorist in an F150 for a couple blocks 🤨‍. A brief irritation during and otherwise lovely outing 😊.

Attention 83rd Ave riders:
The good news is that EPCOR is filling in the holes and finishing construction between 98th and 99th street.
Bad news is that they'll be closing the bike lane between 101 and 102 St starting on Wednesday.
Alternative is the Fringe site detour via 100St & 87 Ave. #yegbike

#yegbike Anyone able to guide me to bike parking at Southgate Centre? I’ve tried to spot something with Google Map street view and can’t see any.

Just picked up an e-reader and diving into ‘Soft City: Building Density for Everyday Life’ by David Sim, borrowed digitally from the Calgary Public Library. 🏙️📚 Excited to explore how urban density can create vibrant, people-friendly spaces! #Urbanism #SoftCity

A Christmas Horrible! A fellow #yycbike urban arrow owner has theirs stolen, among other bikes.

Distinguishing features include a front motor and Grin Cycle Analyst.

Keep an eye out!

This is new to me and I’m absolutely celebrating it now moving forward!

Tibb’s Eve is a Newfoundland and Labrador tradition celebrated on December 23rd, marking an unofficial start to the Christmas season. 🧵

Some Canadians love to complain about the weather, and after following urbanists for a while, I wonder: Is it mostly car drivers complaining?

I’m always hyper-aware about how I might disturb others in public, while some people are so carefree, making noise without a second thought. Honestly, I’d love to be somewhere in between.

Cities & reporters could lead with headlines like, "New Road Design to Save Lives, Create Safer Streets," instead of "Citizens still divided about ‘road diet’." Highlighting stories of lives saved & focusing on the long-term benefits to everyone-including drivers-might help reshape the narrative.
“More than half of the 830 people… said they didn’t care for the new design, giving it a one or two-star rating out of five, with negative reactions ranging from lambasting of the city’s “war on cars” to critiques that the new road still isn’t safe enough for bicycles and pedestrians.”

Women are disproportionately affected when roads are unsafe. They are more likely to be pedestrians & caregivers, meaning they’re crossing dangerous streets with children or older adults.

The "85th Percentile" traffic engineering rule is wild. It says speed limits should be set based on how fast 85% of drivers already go on a road ignoring pedestrians and cyclist safety 😱.

Looking back at photos today I’m reminiscing on my trip to The Annenberg Space for Photography in LA. It was so special to find a gallery dedicated expressly to photography while I was beginning my journey to study it in university.

The cost of a sidewalk plow is between $15K-$40K (model and size dependent), the cost of a road plow is $160K-$200K.

The average annual repair and maintenance cost (in Edmonton) of a bike lane is $178/KM, for roads it’s $1285/KM.

Seems like a no brainer. #yeg
Cities that don't plow their sidewalks hate pedestrians.

A Calgary man was struck in a marked crosswalk by a driver in her 80s.
He was then struck a second time by a driver in her 70s.
He was declared dead on the scene.
Why do we allow this to happen?

Every time I see footage of a vehicle, small or large, running into a bollard, I'm always impressed at how small and simple in design bollards are and how incredibly effective they are. That's top their design right there! 🧵1/2
