It's kinda crazy how we went from 1960/1970s feminism advocating tearing down the very concept of gender roles, to today's world in which gender roles are considered to be so fundamental that if you feel that you do not fit into your assigned gender role, you are called 'gay' or recommended surgery.

Ran into a major snag with Waterfox, that seems to pertain to Firefox as well: hardware acceleration of videos isn't working.

Feature is set to 'on', but I can clearly see in Task Manager that it's all software decoding on the CPU.

Even disabled software fallback in about:config, but no bueno.

Switched yesterday from running Discord in a browser tab to the Discord Messenger application which I wrote about last year: hackaday.com/2025/06/17/h...

Unlike the 1+ GB RAM browser tab or Electron version, it runs in <10 MB of RAM and does everything except video/audio.

Good enough for me.
How Discord Was Ported To Windows 95 And NT 3.1
On the desktop, most people use the official HTML and JavaScript-based client for Discord in either a browser or a still-smells-like-a-browser Electron package. Yet what if there was a way to use a…

The Trump administration's brutality is on graphic display in Minneapolis and its vulgar stupidity in the Greenland fiasco, but just as harmful, though less splashy, is the way they are destroying US science.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

I think it's totally normal that having just the YouTube Subscriptions tab open uses 400+ MB RAM.

This is absolutely fine.

This Thursday, the House Natural Resources Committee will consider a bill that would remove ESA protections for Mexican gray wolves.

H.R. 4255 relies on incorrect data and misinformation. Urge your Rep to OPPOSE this bill and prevent it from passing out of the committee. 📣: https://bit.ly/4pZHDdK
Federal Protections for Mexican Gray Wolves Under Attack | Wolf Conservation Center
Mexican gray wolves are the rarest subspecies of gray wolf in North America, with just 286 known to live in the wild in the United States. Yet despite their tenuous status, Republican members of Congress are leading an all-out attack on the species. H.R. 4255, misleadingly named the "Enhancing Safety for Animals Act" and introduced

What braindead UX pattern is Discord using that 'Log In' pushes you into creating a new account, which you have to log out of before you get tipped into the actual log in screen?

Are the Discord developers huffing extra-strength glue?

The last one was a rhetorical question, natch.

Finally got fed up enough with Microsoft Edge to switch to a different browser. Picked Waterfox as it's not Chromium-based, doesn't intend to kill off normal extensions or add 'AI' BS, and generally feels less... corporate.

UI also feels far more familiar, as an old-school NS/Mozilla user.

Some perspective: The S&P opened down -1.3% on Trump's Greenland saber-rattling. That's $750 billion of wealth destroyed -- roughly equal to estimates of the value of Greenland.

And so ~in dollar terms~ his shenanigans have already cost the US one Greenland, and we've got nothing to show for it.

Great point by @anderspucknielsen.dk that 'Denmark selling Greenland to the US' is effectively the same as the US asking the UK to sell Australia to it.

This is a comparison that ought to be made by all media outlets for the sheer ridiculousness it exposes.

May I once again not-at-all-humbly reiterate what I said back in 2022: the centrist brain-worm that "energy security" comes from crawling from dependence on one fossil fuel supplier to another is absolute bullshit: Europe could and should have been reducing gas reliance faster for the past 3 years
