Sh*t's goin' down in Boston, and the Devil deals the cards.

In the pocket of Big Dame.

Wo aber Gefahr ist, wächst das Rettende auch.

I'm telling myself this is the bit where it looks as if all is lost but the heroes persevere.
I was thinking "When they do Yet Another 'Pride and Prejudice' the people who think the Keira Knightley one is the good one will have to put up with people who think the *latest* one is the good one" & I looked up the cast & most of them are in Sleve McDichael/"Curtains for Zoosha?" territory for me

The worst things are the murdering fishermen & kidnapping people off the streets & starving Sudan & betraying Ukraine & denying healthcare to people, including children, & the sex crimes & corruption & bribes & leaks, but this also makes me sick to my stomach.

Apparently Aldi might have roule? I imagine getting over there would be like a cross between Roller Derby & one of those Nickelodeon shows from my youth where everyone ended up covered with slime but an expedition might be worth it!

I could hit Total Wine at the same time.

I subscribed to this but if I find out I'm being mass-blocked by strangers my amour-propre will be wounded.
this labeler tells you a bunch of useful things but the killer app is the flag for if somebody’s caught 20+ blocks in a 24-hour period and I never want to be without it again

My only theory is that Mitt is one of those guys who does actually believe in a Heaven & a Hell & texts like Mark 10:25 are worrying at him.
"On the tax front, it’s time for rich people like me to pay more," writes ... Mitt Romney? Lots here to debate, but could this op-ed be the germ of a permission structure, or a bipartisan consensus, or maybe common sense? Let the conversation begin. gift link🎁 www.nytimes.com/2025/12/19/o...

NEW: A bill restoring money for pediatric cancer therapies was defeated in the Senate.

My colleague @samsteindc.bsky.social — who has covered this wrenching story ever since the funding was first removed at Elon Musk's behest last year — reports on why Bernie Sanders helped defeat the bill.
A Pediatric Cancer Bill Fell One Vote Short. Bernie Cast It.
The Vermont senator is holding out for a bigger health care package. Advocates are asking: Is the price worth it?

It's been a TERRIBLE week for "I am a professional communicator; everyone is mad at me for something I said; it has to be that they are too stupid to understand me; it can't be that I expressed myself badly or said something untrue or had a bad take."

So, so bloody tired of people who are all "I'm gonna storm the barricades!" in their Substacks, or their column for the Nazi paper, & "I'm onwy a smowwwl bean" when they get pushback.

If you're only a smol bean you were never going to be much use in any struggle, were you?

Have conviction in what you know is true: adults should not have sex with children. To do so is harmful, shameful. Find a community that knows this truth also. Reify this in person, without the intermediation of social media. We are a much larger community than they are

So speaking of the South End here is some Freudenberg lore: when my parents were first An Item stateside (as opposed to in Tübingen when they first got together) they lived in a hearse, & then a friend of theirs who was a nun found them a tiny apartment on St Botolph's St, long before gentrification

Apparently people are trying to do the trendy "two letters from one word, two letters from another" neighborhood name thing in Boston?

These people must be thrown into the Harbor to teach them a lesson.

We are the land of the bean & the cod & do not DO this sort of thing.

I'm such a lightweight I went "My goodness! The film from another reality that leaked into ours was based on a novel?"
Batter up! Goncharov get Oblimov’s lazy ass up. (Always felt the need to read this)

It's always the guys you expect. (I am making a joke but also choking on anger that this is who has power over us, these are the voices that are heard.)
House Dems have released more photos provided to the oversight committee from Jeffrey Epstein's estate.

More images of Woody Allen, Noam Chomsky, Steve Bannon, Bill Gates in this batch.

New to this batch: David Brooks and David Blaine.

Possibly my most Millennial trait is my powerful thirst for craft beer.
The famous Chicago columnist Mike Royko once conducted a beer tasting. Budweiser finished last. His review: “Tastes like it was brewed through a horse.”

In our defense: Craft and microbrews as a group account for more sales than any of them.

Going slightly above & beyond for a patron (lending her my ergonomic rubber seat cushion that I'm not using at the moment) just because I'm so sad about the expectations that we be standardized, interchangeable worker units.

Another thing it would be fun to do as a person with billions of liquid assets is pay for people's med school if they agreed to go into primary care.

A lot of what's frustrating the person on the street about healthcare comes down to not enough PCPs who don't have enough time, & it just gets worse.

I got a sample bottle of one of those fancy shampoos called, like, The Tress Emporium's Amethyst Elixir and my hair is LANK.

Again, what a relief! Back to drugstore John Frieda I go!

It's funny because Dickens wrote a bunch of other Christmas stories & if he hadn't written "A Christmas Carol" we'd probably be, like, "'The Cricket on the Hearth' is great!"

Clara Barton was christened Clarissa Harlowe Barton.

Imagine setting expectations for your daughter that high, & then she just breezes past them & becomes a national heroine & saves countless lives.

We're trying to figure out whether, had the Pilgrims landed in Virginia as planned & the Puritans followed, we'd all think of the *Mid-Atlantic Seaboard* people as the know-it-all, holier-than-thou workaholics.

Or is it the four strenuous seasons & the soil full of rocks that shape character?
