It’s useful to think about things like this in numbers of tenure track professors.

$33M is 358 assistant professors. Or about fourteen percent of the total number of full-time faculty at Michigan State.
SOURCES: Michigan State is firing head coach Jonathan Smith, @theathletic.com has learned.

He went 9-15 in two seasons, including 1-8 in the Big Ten this year. (ESPN first reported).

MSU players meeting called for 2:45. Smith has a $33 million buyout (with offset).

There is no sense in which RFK Jr. is “In Science”.

The extent to which The Atlantic has self-immolated over the past decade is absolutely baffling
Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?

American Rivers is announcing its disapproval of the EPA’s new proposed definition of the WOTUS provision of the Clean Water Act.

The rule would dramatically reduce the reasonable science-based protections used to protect our nation's waterways.

Meromictic lakes are terrifying
Diving through the purple sulfur bacteria layer of Fayetteville Green Lake with our ROV last month. This is the most intense density of PSB that I've seen in many years!

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

It seems self-evidently dumb to follow the strategic instincts of a guy who just voted for the Trump-endorsed candidate to be his own mayor.

Fellow fish nerds, I'm sharing a link to a free PDF of "The Handbook of Freshwater Fishes of West Asia". This new book provides a summary of the taxonomy, distribution, and biology of all freshwater fishes between the Bosphorus, Azerbaijan, Yemen, and Iran. 🐟

Any lawyers should be aware that these programs are probabilistic and can only test images against images already in a training set. Setting aside the workings of the models, any changes in appearance (e.g., aging, injuries, cosmetic surgery, facial hair, etc.) can reduce match certainty
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

A thing that would be good for PoliSci majors to have is a required statistics course. This would fix a lot of problems.

Now that I have time to explain this a little more: since 2021, @sarahsanderson.bsky.social and I, and some other folks from @ecoevoevoeco.bsky.social's lab have been working in QC's Parc national du Lac-Témiscouata on some odd stickleback populations rapidly evolving in response to stocked trout.🧪🐟
