the more things change, the more they stay the same in college football (coaches being showered in cash for not working)
Firings so far this season by Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Penn State, UAB, UCLA and Virginia Tech have those schools committed to buyouts totaling $93.9 million, subject to mitigation and offset, but not including amounts that also will be owed to assistant coaches

possibly stupid question - does anyone in #teamtomo or #cryoem recognize these little stacks (from EMPIAR-12549, U2OS cell lamellae)? The green circle is 300Å, and the spacing between the layers is ~50Å. The fourth, bell-shaped thing is something else, also not sure of that one..

Dems floated a narrow bill to fund the military, which can’t move because the House isn’t in session. Meanwhile, DoD is now going to spend funds not appropriated by Congress to ensure military paychecks continue.

POTUS now both commands and provisions the military. Unconstitutional and SO dangerous
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.
A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC
News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

I made a flyer! Know anyone in CA, OR, WA, or BC who might be interested in collecting mushrooms for research purposes? #mycology #citizenscience

Please share widely! 🧪 🍄‍🟫 🌲

A PDF version can be found here: drive.proton.me/urls/W1MM4FG...
A help-wanted poster seeking volunteer mushroom collectors in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

The poster provided some background info about the research project and study system and how folks can contribute if they are interested.

REQUEST | Calling all mycophiles, naturalists, and citizen scientists in CA, OR, WA, and BC!

Going for a hike in the woods or a walk in your neighborhood park?
• Please keep your eyes peeled for the purple mushrooms of L.a-o!
• Collect the mushrooms* if you are able to access them safely.
• If you can, please take a photo of the mushrooms and the tree(s) you find them under.
*If you find a mushroom that is clearly rotten or moldy, please don't collect it.

"I collected some purple mushrooms. What should I do now?"
1. Please keep the mushroom fresh:
• Store in paper, not plastic.
• Keep cool/ refrigerate, but do not freeze.
• Store mushrooms away from light.
2. Email me to arrange pick-up, delivery, or shipment* of your sample.
* will cover packing and shipping expenses!

• You will receive acknowledgement in presentations and publications stemming from this research.
• You will receive copies of journal publications from this research (data available upon request).
• You are invited to attend presentations of this research and to visit the lab at Stanford University. Page 2 of the help-wanted poster includes reference photos of the study organism and a map of where this species has been observed. All images and the map are sourced from iNaturalist.

Fred Ramsdell was parked at a campground in Montana on Monday when his wife suddenly started shouting. He first thought that maybe she had seen a grizzly bear. Instead, she had regained cell service and had seen a flood of text messages with the same news. “You just won the Nobel Prize!” she yelled.
Winning a Nobel Prize Interrupted His Off-the-Grid Vacation
Fred Ramsdell found out about his Nobel Prize nearly 12 hours after it was announced because he was on vacation in the Rockies.
