Grumpy Black crone who likes to think and explore (and seek mindfulness, within reason). In pfp: a hedgehog with a kente kufi on its head, and red laser eyes. Not chill.
Currently rearing an aging, unsociable 🦔 rescue.
Pinned
Quick intro:
- mid-30s, Fenty 450, Niger Deltan descent 👋🏿
- known elsewhere for locked account where I vented about bad grad school XP
- older now; venting isn’t good for my blood pressure
- non-professional account: expect cooking, plants, mourning pets, deconstruction of fundie upbringing (1/)

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

My abs are sore post-massage (???), but I also want to run tonight before it gets too cold, so let me take this nap. 💤

In recent days, oddly similar AI-generated videos depicting nonexistent Black people accompanied by captions such as “dear white people” and “hit follow if you want peace” have proliferated on TikTok. Here's a look at the spam network posting the videos.

Evergreen.
Look folks gen AI videos are out in the wild so if you weren't already being careful about sharing rage bait videos then now is a great time to start

If you can't trace a video back to a trusted source then I recommend leaving it where it is, like a slice of bologna you found on the street

I ran into a hotel booking bot on the phone. It quoted me $260 for a room. I asked what it's fave color was and it disintegrated into botspeak, so I hung up.

When I got there, however, the nice lady at the hotel desk said yes, they have a room and it costs about $170.

Javier Sanchez Mendoza Jr. helped Sofi secure an H-2A visa, promising a job on a Georgia blueberry farm.

When she arrived, she was not sent out to work in the fields like the others.

She was forced to live at his house and sign a marriage license.

Read and dissect the study (like I always do), shrug and move on.
Question for my people: if a study dropped tomorrow saying seasoning makes you gain weight… what’s your next move? Because I’m not eating unseasoned chicken. Be serious.

Everyone on my skyline is older than ICE. We lived a life without them and nothing has improved with their existence: housing is not cheaper, healthcare is not more accessible, and we are not more secure. Abolish ICE and it is your moral duty to oppose them kidnapping and trafficking people.

And now AI slop is taking a serious bite out of SocArXiv.

Thread:
In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

This kind of BS is so insulting to those of us who put deliberate care and thought into crafting scientific figures. The images are supposed to SHOW SOMETHING and to CLARIFY information. What is the point of having an image full of nonsense?? #fuckAI
Uhh,,, Figure 1 shows you... what exactly? Trying to understand Medical fryrmbial, runctitional features and mum's legs going through concrete.

This whole article is a bit of a disaster. And it's very difficult to find other published work for the author. Strange! 🧪

If I open an article and the splash banner is AI slop, I close the tab. If you don't have the bare minimum of discernment to not do that, what else do you consider "good enough" to publish?
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.
