i’m paper and pencil on maybe 90% of stuff and people ask me hither and yon about how my classes are so engaged and how i get so much active learning and dude just eliminate the consumption machines. computers and phones are for consumption. production comes from the human mind.
You know what works:
Small class sizes
Teachers with support from admins
Engaged, rested, properly fed students not freaking out about EVERYTHING

I think people do love it but it’s gotten too expensive to justify a family of four going regularly.
Also, every movie is 2.5 hours long now and that’s just really fucking stupid considering everyone’s attention spans have been permanently destroyed.

If movie theaters were a thing consumers loved, they would be there. They go there for horror movies, some action blockbusters. Let me reiterate a line I wrote decades ago about the nascent digital space: Consumers have taken control of their entertainment experience & they are never giving it back.

It seems Not Great that the bureaucracies in charge of California’s streets at ~every level of government are lawless rogue agencies that are not subject to any real public oversight.
LA quietly stopped repaving all streets last July to avoid fulfilling its ADA obligations. The federal govt says when you repave a street, you have to update all the curb ramps. LA has tons of out of date curb ramps, so the rule makes repaving much more expensive. The city's solution: stop repaving!

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.
I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.

If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

This is an incredibly good idea and would be a million times more useful than the gondola, but the homeowner and left-NIMBY crashout over these new stations and cutting lanes on Glendale Blvd. would cause the sun to explode.

i think every day i struggle with an internal cognitive conflict which is that
a) this country chose this, enjoy it
b) the most vulnerable did not in fact choose this, that’s a cruel and venal attitude and that is not who i am nor the man my parents raised
