My take at Wylder’s face reveal. He’s Duchess’s twin brother, so he must resemble her. The tired look is from his ailment. I’ve noticed that his garments have a Celtic or Nordic looking embroidery elements, so I tried to express that too

Units are humans whose bodies have been taken over by robotic exoskeletons with artificial intelligence. They rewire the human brain in order to use it to enhance their processing power.
Luckily, Dr. Antontak here has learned how to reverse that process and kick the exoskeleton out.

“Uhh, what do we do now?” Niarith was visibly nervous. She stepped closer to Lucia.
“You wait. If I get this done in time, everything is fine. If not... well… at least we won’t be consciously aware of it.”
The doors burst open, sending chairs flying across the room. Lucia barely managed to dodge one of them, and Darlinna was knocked to the floor by another. Lolanene moved to help her up while Niarith crossed the remaining space to Lucia and held her.
Dr. Antontak did not react. He just kept typing. In the doorway, visible through the cloud of mist the sudden temperature change had created, stood at least ten Units, with Dr. Formolius standing in front of them.
“My my my, whatever are you all doing in here?” She asked, her grin clearly forced, her cheer far too cheery.
“Oh nothing much, Fringaline, just uh.. This.” He pressed the enter key on the keyboard, and a second later, every Unit behind her spasmed and fell to the floor.

She bared her teeth and advanced, the fingers of her right hand sparking. Two steps back and I bumped into the rear wall; no room to dodge as she grabbed for my forearm.
It felt like the bones in my arm were replaced with red-hot spikes of metal. I screamed and twitched; when she stopped, the only reason I didn’t keel over was I already had my back against the wall.

The succubus approached me, still smiling brightly. I offered her the bill.
She reached for it, and as she took it from me, I grabbed her wrist with my other hand and revealed my tattoo. “Hello, ‘Carla.’ I’m going to have to ask you to come with me.”
The change in her face was dramatic. The smile vanished, replaced by an ugly snarl. She tried to pull away, but I held her fast. And then the world exploded into starbursts.
I didn’t black out, but I stumbled and lost my grip. I felt her slip from my grasp. The bus boy who had clocked me with the serving tray wound up for another blow. I hadn’t noticed him come up behind us. I rolled out of the way, then took a breath, trying to clear my head.
“What are you doing? Stop her!” Carla shouted.
The bus boy nodded and lunged at me again, but he was no fighter. His moves were clumsy, predictable. I dodged to the side, then thumbed on my Taser and jabbed it into his ribs. He dropped.
I turned back to the succubus. “You won’t get that lucky again,” I warned.
“I won’t need to.” The succubus smiled as she flicked a lighter, igniting her cigarette.

Fae funneled into the office, baring razor-edged teeth, wielding sparkling magic. An inferno caught one in the chest as Skalva dodged three strikes in rapid succession, feinting, rolling, leaping back to their feet. The fire sword came to life in their hands.

A nymph jumped the desk, landing like a cat in May’s space. She rippled into wolf form, slipping into the fae’s defenses and scoring faer throat with her claws. Fae gripped her sides, nails digging in, and May shifted human, kicked out with her foot, then was wolf again before the nymph quite figured out where she’d gone. She jumped onto faer back and clamped her teeth around faer neck, crunching through sinew and bone. Licking saccharine blood from her lips, she rolled to dodge a clawed foot coming down for her head. She shifted human, grabbed her attacker’s foot, and crushed it. They growled and shifted into jaguar shape, and suddenly her grip was gone.

Training for the heist I’m not sure I will ever write. 🫣🤦🏼‍♀️ Zane trying to fight the tension between them—

When we finally get into a fighting stance, there’s a sheen of sweat on her face—the tips of her hair and the collar of her tunic damp from exertion. She’s a goddess.
I’m holding on by a thread.
“We’re gonna start with footwork. I know Jess showed you a few things, but power comes from your base. If your feet are all over the place, your punches are gonna feel like” —I flick her forehead— “this.”
“Ow. Rude.” Shifting into stance, she mimics me, but it’s a little stiff.
“Loosen up. You look like a mannequin.”
“Do you want me to punch you?”
“If you can. I probably deserve it.”
She swings, but I easily dodge it, throwing punches again and again until we’re both laughing and breathless, and she finally lands one light jab to my side.
“Boom! Victory!” She fist bumps the ceiling, hopping around like she just won a pro wrestling title.
“Unbelievable.” I pretend to flinch and gingerly touch the spot. “I train you for half an hour, and you’re already turning against me.”
She steps close again, my hand finding her wrist and lightly guiding it into better form.
“Like this. Keep your elbow tucked and drive from the hip.”
She nods, but she’s not looking at her wrist, she’s looking at me, and I’ve never been more tempted to say to heck with it all and kiss her. I let go quickly, forcing myself to take two large steps back.

From Stars, Sparkling Like Snow ✨👱🏿‍♀️

Not willing to stick around and find out how convincing I'm not, I make a dash for the dressing rooms. There's a back door that leads into the hall between shops. From there, I enter the next unlocked door I find. I'm in the land of fragrances, the air full of heavy scents. The blend of flowers and musk makes me cough, but I continue through, dodging people and displays of scented liquids, contained in bottles made of a forcefield that won't break if, say, some klutz clips a display and knocks a bunch to the floor. I catch a bottle with a swear and an apology, fumbling it between my fake and real hands. When I exit the store, I run immediately into one of the girls.

I mean, into Max in costume.

He giggles again, proving that he hasn't forgotten how to get into character from his MusAMS days. The giggle is the least Max Speed-ish sound I've ever heard. He also has a passing mimicry of Oona's voice as he says, "Come on," and grabs my good wrist.

Only then do I realize that the Hanaran captain is steps behind him. "Kak." I'm the slowest and least coordinated of the three of us, but I dig deep to keep from holding Max back, ignoring the stitch that's already developed in my side. We DODGE travelers who are here to shop, but the Hanaran barrels right through them. Some trip him up, but all of our swerving is adding time to our escape.

“Can’t you take all of those profiling algorithms and whatever and point ‘em at yourself?”
“I have never tried. In theory, it would be possible.”
Six fell silent, and Yana could swear that, between the howling winds, she could hear the spinning of an entire legacy system’s worth of drives and processors in attempted contemplation.
“I am finished.”
“That was quick,” Rook said.
“I have had many decades of firsthand experience to derive intelligence from.”
“And?”
Scrap crumbled under a great weight as an alloyed figure shifted, rising to her feet.
“Analysis suggests that I want to become a poet.”
