On Friday, April 25th, I became the first* African American woman to earn tenure & promotion in the Univ. of Vermont’s College of Education & Social Services history.

Naturally, I went home to reflect on my educational past & to think about my future.

“These results suggest the need to move beyond labor-centric definitions of educational success and adopt a broader framework that acknowledges unpaid and informal contributions. In conclusion, higher education should be recognized as a long-term social investment…”

I'd like to think my people are only concerned with "luxury" as a concept in this moment because of centuries of artificially enforced austerity, but social status as a coping mechanism is much more likely.

Class as a shield is NOT reliable for us so...what are you really trying to accomplish?

We can't convince universities to stop hiring Gordon Gee, so I don't know how we push for there to be any consequences for betraying the country for a few research grants. But it feels like figuring that out will be necessary.

The student loan system—made up of banks, loan servicers, universities, and the federal government—profits from the desperation of its borrowers. @kwistent.bsky.social reviews a new book that describes how it can shape every aspect of a person’s life.

We do. But no one is listening.
This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

I don’t think people outside of healthcare realize how much AAP is standing out as a moral backbone of medicine right now, especially in pediatrics. There is so much fear at institutions. Seeing an org directly and repeatedly targeted refuse to budge an inch is extraordinary.

I once taught a whole lesson on the narratives of deservedness in the very strange concept of “stealing” books from something conspicuously branded as a “free” little library. The students struggled with it. A lot of internalized beliefs about poverty and worth. But I think it was a good lesson.
If you are concerned about people swiping books from your little free library and reselling those books, I ask you to go to your local used bookstore and sell a book

Okay?

Understand?

Alright, next question
