Pretty despondent over the cartoonishly repressive “hate speech” law passed by Parliament last night. Australia is in really bad shape. In some (obv not all) ways even worse than the USA, even though most Australians don’t want to see it.

The sham process that the government has undertaken on this bill is as appalling as the bill itself, and this last minute deal with the Coalition makes a terrible bill even more divisive and even more dangerous.

Little note in the new Bill on Hate Speech

Good thing there will never be a Minister who acts in bad faith when they go about banning groups.

Labor is passing laws that are more extreme than what Trump has attempted, on immigration and speech, largely at the behest of the media. But if Trump tried to do it, the same outlets would say they were bad, fascistic overreach. Insanely dumb country.

I’ve said it a bunch (usually to tired directors who were humoring me!) but Freeplay’s soul lies in its ability to upset bad men.

The people creating the problems for indie game creators should be worried about Freeplay’s schedule dropping. They should read it through their fingers, bracing.

Having read the draft of the Australian government's new "hate" legislation, the scope it gives the government of the day to restrict civil society is massive. It's very clear that it could be used to outlaw a Palestine Action-style organisation www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01...
Hate laws to pass after Labor and Liberal deal
The Liberal Party struck an agreement with Labor to tighten the scope of a bill to ban hate groups, but the position of the Nationals is unclear.

there are a lot of good reasons to resent the US but there is no reason why you should expect Canada or Europe or anywhere else to not fall to the same sort of right wing brain worms the establishment political class has fallen for here because it's all being motivated by the same basic factors

Hate and hate groups raise very real problems. There are existing powers to ban neo-Nazis and other groups that promote or incite violence. We have repeatedly asked why these powers have not already been used against neo-Nazis and not had adequate answers.

This very preliminary data, supporting concerns about negative impacts of the ban, shows why more online reform is needed, headspace said.

Early data from Australia's national youth mental health service shows that the teen social media ban emerged as a prominent factor in why 12- to 15-year-olds were coming to them.
