the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.

Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

I'm obsessed with the recording slang term "good tape" — which meant high-quality audio but with podcasting morphed into good, emotionally resonant content. Beautiful metonymy. We should adapt this to simulation design for when something funny & emergent happens, "that's good vec"

Hoping to reschedule the show for next Sunday, stay tuned...

Lots of illness going around, keep rapid testing yourselves folks!

Massive crowd in Melbourne/Naarm today (in case you thought this movement was going to be placated with more colonisation). Until the occupation ends. Until Western war criminals and their enablers face justice. Until Palestine is free.

I feel the same way about a lot of early 21st century internet culture, especially YouTube thumbnail aesthetics - culture with a certain frictionless "velocity", prefiguring (and maybe even reinforcing the expectations for) slop

Love this talk by (the always fun and brilliant) Dennis Yi Tenen — ca. 3hr:22min > 3:16 in the livestream of this Triple Canopy symposium — about the purported "AI translation" of an English/Russian/Ukrainian conversation between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Lex Friedman

This whole series has been great, and genuinely moving, despite (or because of) being polished campaign video.

It is so rare to see those techniques—with that *surety*—used to say things like this, from positions like this, with a platform like this. No hedging, here.

Makes me want to do the work

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I cannot stress how good the writing in Baby Steps is. I’ve described it as if you did Silent Hill characterization in a comedy. Really beautiful, largely improvised, magical realist narrative aimed directly at its audience.

I know I keep talking about it but I just finished Baby Steps. That ending got me choked up. Honestly my favourite game I've played in god knows how long. This feels like a real all-timer for me. Absolutely everything about it just feels so... perfect. I'm properly giddy about it all. ART, MAN

damning thread on how the IDF's propaganda arm is scraping 3D assets intended for things like games, films, or architectural purposes and kitbashing together supposed hamas bunkers and iranian nuclear sites. a genocide campaign propped up in part by someone's nephew who got too into blender.

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is now unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war

We're now finding out that as many as 70,000 people had their government IDs provided to prove their ages leaked by Discord. Like I wrote last week, this is an inherent risk (and made greater by a rushed process) of getting platforms to do age checks
Discord says 70,000 users may have had their government IDs leaked in breach
The ID pics had been submitted as part of age-related appeals.

The fact that all sides of a D6 are a set, and that you upgrade a hero all at once (well, aside from items) is so key to everything in the game.

In truth I am super critical of the Math Aesthetics of normative card-based deckbuilders. A function like, say, 30 Choose 5 has bad brainfeel imo.
doougle.net
Slice & Dice is truly a staggering work of game system design - its Blessing & Curse & Item valuation system is so atomic and allows for such wildly emergent situations.

Also: I'm on record discussing this on our Eggplant ITD series, but I think dice are fundamentally more interesting than cards.

I am hundreds, probably actually thousands, of hours into Slice & Dice and I am *still* encountering totally novel, exciting situations. For sure my all time fav turn-based roguelike.
