i think it's more like a split between 'keeping your racism polite in mixed company' and what we've got now. it's still active, just not as virulent because there's awareness that there's a crossable line before you hit slur territory. now we don't even have a line, really

our YRs split into factions over a protest of gay marriage which looking back...people really thought that being white would overcome being gay in terms of being a conservative mover and shaker.

just because one group wasn't shouting slurs didn't mean they weren't also against interracial marriage or whatever...they just didn't necessarily think the gop should make it illegal.

like was every individual college republican holding hatred for minorities in their heart? idk man but they hosted insanely Islamaphobic panels and supported racist policies and sometimes said weird racist stuff in front of me when they read me as white (or 'jokingly' if they read me as latine).

imho it's just a social split: the young republicans wanted to interact with the rest of society, and the people who joined YAF or TPUSA didn't care about alienating their peers and developed a persecution complex about no one liking them...but that doesn't mean the YRs weren't racist too

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.

I don’t know how to approach “Republicans weren’t racist in the early aughts” as someone who went to Texas during the early aughts and had to debate whether or not Black students were “stealing” people’s spots in class.

The action hasn’t died down in DC, they’ve just made it less visible after their shock and awe phase. I’d bet we’ll see the same in Chicago & Portland.

The “emergency” ended a month ago, but I woke up this morning to reports of 3 ICE actions within a 10 min walk of my house within 6-7:30am. #FreeDC
