I was working with mainframes when the movie launched, but I had just acquired my first pocket computer (Sharp PC-1500) which ran BASIC. I was *told* that the movie took its name from two instructions in [another version of] BASIC, TRON (TRace ON) and TROFF (TRace OFF) but I had no way to verify it.
