The fourth and last of my Morgaine covers for C.J. Cherryh. The first was for her debut novel Gate of Ivrel, and this assignment came over a decade later. 1/2

Mounted on white horses, a man and woman wearing plate armor pause in front of pillars inscribed with hieroglyphic-style writing. In one gauntleted hand, she holds out a glowing sphere that bathes her face and long white hair in light while casting shadow back upon the pillars. In the other hand, she grasps the blade of a sword with ornate basket hilt. Her gray long cloak spills down over the flank of her horse. Her companion, set slightly behind her, wears a peaked helm with nose guard. He props a bow vertically on the saddle of his horse. It's head jerks back as he pulls on the reins.

Oof. Seeing this early preview of Descent to Undermountain (1998) in PC Gamer's November 1995 issue makes me wince after all I've heard about its development.

Even at this early stage, Creative Director Michael McConnohie is reporting challenges in retooling Descent's engine into an RPG.

A two-page spread for Descent to Undermountain, an exclusive preview for PC Gamer, with much technical detail about what they're trying to do and some of the early difficulties, with a timeframe of release early in 1996 (despite not having started work on it in April 1995)
