Thanks to @per-vertex.bsky.social I was able to fix this issue this morning. It is actually detailed on PC gaming wiki and it involves just changing the ini file to Shader Model 4 instead of its default 3 (DX10 vs. DX9 default). Apparently if your GPU is SM4, the game does not work with SM 3 at all!

Windows Vista 64 bit crashing post-install when 4 GB of RAM is installed is perhaps one of the most ironic blunders in OS history. I just experienced it this morning after forgetting about it again and chuckled while taking out a stick of DDR2.

Shot in the dark, but... anyone ever have Cryostasis crash on launch? It does not spit out an error about physX... just straight crashes on launch. No clue as to why. Anyone?
