"A key aspect of the way we lived with each other before these self-styled epochal developments [post-2020] involved exactly the “social shame and cultural pressure” that Klein and other influential voices now come to condemn"

Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

Not at all surprising that these are the products of a decade of Trump’s corrosive effects on civic and social norms.

He stopped at Salt River Bay on St. Croix to refill his water supply, mistaking it for a freshwater estuary. Instead, he found hostile Arawak people who by then were more than familiar with his depredations on Hispaniola. They attacked the landing party and forced them back to sea.

The only part of the United States Columbus ever stepped foot in is Puerto Rico.
. He was never on the mainland. Go ahead, look it up!

Columbus landed in PR on November 19, 1493, during his 2nd voyage, naming it San Juan Bautista (after John the Baptist).
He also did a brief visit to St. Croix.

we’ll see how his mayoral tenure shakes out but i am convinced that Mamdani has the juice. not just the charisma to win an election but the temperament to govern and the measured pragmatism of someone who genuinely believes what they’re saying and wants to accomplish real things.

All kids deserve free meals.
ohiocapitaljournal.com
Making free meals available to all public students wouldn't only produce benefits equal to the costs, it would produce social benefits with a net worth of about $520 million a year, according to an economic analysis released last Monday. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2025/10/14/a...
Analysis: Universal school meals in Ohio would pay for themselves — and then some • Ohio Capital Journal
Most Ohio school kids already get free meals. Making them free for all students would produce big social benefits, new study says.

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

This is such a thorough take down of Bari Weiss and the vapid shill she is for oligarch billionaires. He especially shreds the Free Press over it's coverage of trans issues and the so called whistleblower Jamie Reed.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

Sally may have a point here, because if you’ve consistently managed to fail upwards over the course of your “journalism” career by finding increasingly wealthy benefactors to flatter and bankroll you, I wouldn’t bet against your ability to shill for capital and power either.

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Took our eldest (a precocious 11) to the local high school’s production of Les Mis and holy shit did it go hard. Terrific production from top to bottom and a reminder of how important the arts are in our public schools.
