A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

fanart illustrations of Adam, a chubby douchebag with unkempt hair and a goatee, wearing a white and yellow sweater, passionately makes out with Lute, woman with a bleached platinum bob haircut and pale skin, who slides her hand into his shirt. the dialogue, "a-are you real?" "well fuck, baby, you wanna find out?"

Mamdani promises to deploy *hundreds* if lawyers to fight for trans rights, create a new office of LGBTQ affairs, and allocate millions of dollars to fund housing and healthcare for trans kids and adults

This is what fighting back looks like--elevating activists to materually support trans people.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

🪲ID Guess: Common Assassin Bug
#bugsky #ozinverts #inverts
A sideview photo of a common assassin bug sitting on the edge of a rusty metal rod. The bug is cast in shadow with a sharp light behind it, illuminating the fine hairs all over its body. It has a robust body with thin limbs and a small tube like head. Its abdomen is cream coloured, its thorax and head a dark maroon, its antennae bright orange, and its legs start orange and fade into light green. It has small black eyes and a redish tubular mouthpart tucked under its head. A three quarter view photo of the same common assassin bug. In this view its head and tubular mouthpart is better seen. Its head is almost as thin as its leg, and droops slightly at the end as it tapers into the mouthpart, which is made of two segments. A sideview photo of the same common assassin bug from a bit further away. In this view the abdomen is better seen, which is the biggest part of the bugs body. The abdomen is a light cream and oblong, with the edges of it tapering to a thin edge and curving slightly upward like the brim of a hat. That edge has small ridges and little red dots beneath each ridge line. The wing can just be seen starting at the middle of the thorax and draping over ontop of the abdomen.

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.

Thinking about my Wizard Hut again
A two story building, painted off-white with navy blue trim stands to the left of a one-story stucco-covered shop that once appeared to have been a convenience store and deli, but is now directing patrons to the "Surf Hut" Surfing Supplies and rental store next door. AT the front door of the two-story a wizard, happy and waving appears to in high spirits for his surf-shop. A couple of palm trees frame the taller building, as well as a large leafed plant. There's an ice machine in front of the one-story building and next to it is a drinks vending machine advertising "WIZ COLA" and the machine is filled with various bottles, drinks, and elixirs. To the right of the machine is a trash can and next to that is a board with information about the beach down below the berm that makes up this shop's location. To the right of the board is a souple of signs indicating that swimming is permittable at the beach far below. A handful of beach umbrellas can be seen far below. The water is blue and welcoming with waves rolling into shore.

Behind the Buildings is a parking lot which currently holds a small yellow car and an older looking camper van from which two bikini-clad witches had hopped onto their brooms. The first witch holds her broom parallel to her body, gently lifting off in her pink and periwinkle swim attire, her matching sandals and hat are stark against the billowing clouds in the sky.
The second witch has a surfboard (a rather small one) tucker under her right arm. She appears to have landed on her broom, ready to zoom down to the water.

an unfortunate irony about this post - and even if you are the staunchest anti-ai critic out there, i think you'd agree - is that some of the most bigoted things are being said to respond to this. copy/pasting phrasing and terminology used by bigots but replacing "dna" with "bits" doesn't make it ok

i'm completely serious when i say that much of the dismissive ai discourse on here fires the bigotry neuron

if you're writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go "oh that's fine to say because it's not a real person" (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

DSA Sonoma County endorses Prop 50. (1/2)
Last month the California state legislature passed a bill to put Prop 50 on the ballot this November, a proposal that would temporarily redraw our state’s congressional districts to counterbalance the Republican led partisan gerrymandering that states like Texas, Florida and Missouri have implemented at the direction of Donald Trump to rig elections in their favor. Without Prop 50 allowing California to fight back, these changes would lock in an artificial far right majority to continue the assault on working people that we’ve seen this past year, from illegal ICE raids in our communities, to the gutting of what little protections regular people have left to fill the pockets of the 1%, to cracking down on free speech and the right to organize. We stand with organized labor in supporting Prop 50, because it is a necessary measure to prevent permanent fascist control of our government. We oppose gerrymandering, and at the same time recognize that California cannot unilaterally disarm and hand control of congress to a nonrepresentative right wing majority. If Prop 50 passes, it will have real, tangible impacts on the lives of immigrants, trans people, and the working class as a whole. Even so, it is not a long term solution to the problems we are facing. We are committed to continue the fight against fascism and for democratic socialism past November, including by supporting the California Fair Elections Act to lift the ban on public financing for California elections.
