"In 1994 while looking for something else in the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) I found an uncatalogued, uncaptioned negative of a man and a woman in front of a 'socialist' bookshop. I showed the librarians but we couldn't identify the location, the only clue in the photo was the number 530 above the door and it was presumed to be taken in one of the logging towns. Nevertheless the VPL were quite excited by this discovery as they had hardly any photographic record of Vancouver's socialist history and they duly catalogued the negative but the subjects and location were listed as 'unknown'.

Then 30 years later just for fun I put a scan of it up on a BC photos Facebook page. On there an archaeologist and history buff Celia Nord commented that in a thesis on women's socialist history she'd read, there was mention of a Mrs. Cameron and her socialist bookshop at 530 Westminster Avenue.

The VPL confirmed John M. Cameron had a business and lived at 530 Westminster Avenue in 1903 listed as a stationer. Westminster Avenue was later renamed as Main Street, Vancouver.

I'm not sure what all these buildings are called, their age, or even exactly where I was when I took these, but the never ending examples of cool old architecture here in Winnipeg is a thrill.

An old light stone building 9 stories tall stands at the peak of the intersection of two roads creating the tip of a triangle. The sky is a midnight blue and lights can be seen in the windows as a street light lights the sidewalk.

A very old, probably turn of the century medium brown brick building stands wall to wall between two other buildings. Four stories tall, the top windows are arched with a lighter stone underweight to accent. There is a red light coming from the farthest right top window. There is a dark steel fire escape on each floor with the bottom ladder pulled up. Above the top windows is a neo-classical design.

A well lit light stone building in a neo-classical design with two pillars flanking a large, arch way of windows. Above, the roof is peaked & there is a carving in the middle lit up by lights. Below the window are two smaller columns flaking a rectangular entrance way. Behind are modern buildings full of windows.

A 3 story, light brick w red accents building stands on a corner with the main floor entrance facing the sidewalk. The stories are lined with well spaced windows accented by a deep red carved overhand. At the top is a red accent running along the whole floor.

In my experience, cops will simply tell you, the victim, to leave the area if the other person shows up. They very seldom do anything to remove the aggressor.

Yesterday, I heard doctors speak who had recently been on the ground in Gaza with Doctors Without Borders.

They shared videos and photos.

It was…crushing. I can’t find the words to tell you how harrowing and devastating their testimony was.

They, and their Palestinian colleagues, are heroes.

Indian is/was my favourite cuisine & I agree that it doesn't photograph well. I saw "was" b/c I'm haven't decided if Ethiopian food has taken over the top spot. It depends on the day.

🤣🤣 I can see how someone could have a hard time with it for that reason, but I highly suggest giving it a try at some point (if you can get over your visual aversion) b/c it is incredible.

Inevitable, yes. It could be years from now, though. I think as a society we are so removed from collective action, & have been primed to see it as a bad thing, & risk that it may be a long time. I hope I'm wrong.

Of all the cuisines in the world, I swear Ethiopian is the most beautiful.

The colour!!! Look at it all!

Ethiopian take out dish showing the variety of colours of the food. Pale yellow (cabbage and carrot), orange (kind Alicha, I think), deep red (beer & potato), green (spinach), brownish orange (misir wot), and in the middle bright yellow (azifa maybe) framed by the soft beige of a spongy injera.

There were a whole lot of Indigenous ppl who were part of that as well....their descendants are still here.

Not to mention, a lot of those British ppl stayed in Canada & have Descendents here.
