Why debt justice?

Debt has been used for centuries as a tool of exploitation - leading to increased poverty and inequality in the global south.

Debt is used in the UK to punish the poor in a system that is rigged for the rich and wealthy.

This injustice CAN be stopped

Solidarity and respect to all those who have campaigned long and hard for this cruel policy to be lifted.

We know households with children are disproportionately likely to be in a negative budget, or struggling with heavy debt. This is an important change, long overdue, but warmly welcomed.

High value council tax surcharge is welcome - councils are desperately underfunded and more revenue is always welcome.

However, this does nothing to address the burden council tax places on low-income households. The £8bn of debt will only increase.
November 26, 2025 at 1:39 PM
The scrap of the two-child limit is huge win. Households with children are the most likely to live in negative budgets.

This is a massive win for tireless campaigning across the country from @ippr.org @citizensadvice.bsky.social and others!

A great moment for people up and down the country.

Millions are being pushed into council tax debt because the system is designed to hit those with the least. The Chancellor must use the Autumn Budget to deliver real reform — not tweaks.

Millions of Brits battle with council tax debt. It's time for reform
Low-income households spend three times as much of their income on council tax than higher earners. Is it time for reform?

Tomorrow the chancellor faces a clear choice: allow millions to fall into crisis, or take meaningful steps: fix council tax, ban bailiffs, tackle energy costs. This budget should be the moment for this.

The Budget Must Address the Household Debt Crisis

The cost-of-living crisis isn’t over. Unemployment and bankruptcies are rising, and more than 10 million people are affected by growing household debt. This budget is a crucial moment for action.

An important read....
Ahead of the UK budget, government debt has dominated headlines. Threat of a UK “debt crisis” is used to justify cuts in welfare and public services.

But the story is far more nuanced and the REAL global debt crisis isn’t getting nearly enough attention. @tim-jones6.bsky.social explains

Ramping up public investment is the best route out of the UK’s productivity crisis.

Our new report finds increasing public investment by an additional 2% of GDP per year would kickstart growth, raise average earnings, and strengthen the public finances.

ACTION ALERT at #COP30

Climate justice means the Global North must cut emissions first and fastest and repay its ecological debt. It must provide public and non-debt-creating climate finance to the Global South.

Anything less is a denial of responsibility.
