When I was writing my book on Oshii in the early 2000s, an expensive DVD set was the best way to see this.

Over 20 years later… it’s still just that DVD set.

Why didn’t I write about this series in my book? 1. I wanted to focus on titles for an English speaking audience and 2. I couldn’t afford it
Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!

I lucked into this, and only realized it was Mamoru Oshii after that fact. Hilarious, wildly inventive, and has a line style and shorthand that's just breathtaking. I desperately need a remastered bluray to exist and be in my home

Aside from the AI slop, every single trans person with grandparents who died before we had to find out how badly they’d take it is shifting in their seat uncomfortably at this idea.

I understand what about the capitalist hellscape pushes people to think this way, but I also think that deciding things are only worth knowing if they help at your job is needlessly giving the game away to those genuinely evil forces.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

Fantastic piece.

Strongly recommend reading this.

It tackles the most prevalent form of Liberal Zionism that still pervades much discourse even as people claim to disavow it.

Liberation Is Not Integration: On liberal Zionism, one-state fantasies, and what Palestinians actually want
The left’s view of Palestine’s future often reduces to vague terms like “one-state solution” or “equal rights for all” but few address the tough questions they raise, especially: how can Palestinians ...

Reality is easy. What takes effort is bigotry. You must willfully maintain ignorance and stunted intellectual and ethical growth. It requires deliberately turning away from facts and reality. It means hanging out with some of the worst and most tedious fucking assholes you will ever endure!

It seems to me as though rejecting any and all means by which people make sense of their lives is probably bad.
I’ve become convinced that the most tedious psuedo-clever argument is that something is kind of like religion

Seeing Wake Up Dead Man and Andrew Scott’s character, who‘s transparently a pastiche of John C. Wright, reminded me of this old piece, and man, I’m a massive bitch.

(Note that Recursive Occlusion is no longer for sale, though I keep intending to reissue it.)

The final beat of the album is utterly heartbreaking
Seeming: The World
our 4th LP

This record was hard to make. It wriggled, bit, shapeshifted, ran away from home, yelped from bad dreams, scared off friends and family, and refused to play nice. But kicking and screaming, it is born today. Welcome to the World.

Studios lament the loss of "company men" without looking at the differences in the ways Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were treated.

You get "company men" by being good to the men who work for the company.
From Jack Kirby to Steve Gerber to Alan Moore to pretty everybody else who ever worked for DC or Marvel, "Work for Hire" is one of the biggest con jobs ever pulled.
