This is the final episode in the limited run series, a re-release of the conversations that became Bad Indians Book Club. In it we return to where we started, the knowledge that our stories matter because we matter.

I will say that doing book events in the aftermath of Thomas King's revelations has been interesting.

See you tonight in Halifax!

As @rjjago.bsky.social points out in this excellent editorial, this is not a victimless crime. And King has profited greatly from ethnic fraud: he has made an entire career from speaking for (and not just writing about) Indigenous peoples.

This is probably the most important point though:

I got a whole thing in my head about "Indian at Large," diaspora as a shield, the perils of genealogy without community, and how my book, Bad Indians Book Club, gets at a lot of this.

Need to think about who to pitch that to because it's more than I can do in a skeet thread
His OoC & Companion of the Order of Canada need to be returned ASAP. He says he will NOT return them as they were bc of his writing. A writing career BASED ON A LIE!

Thomas King, who built prolific career telling Indigenous stories, reveals he is not part Cherokee
In an essay published in the Globe and Mail, the author of “The Inconvenient Indian” said a whistle-blowing organization shared his ancestry.

It’s incredibly frustrating the way the boomers systematically broke every institution in our society and yet still hold on desperately to all the levers of power even as they drive off the cliff.

We’re not ready for an aging population — and it's going to cost us
Canada's government budgets keep getting squeezed by our aging population. When are we going to do something about it?

I think if there was a financial cost to being outed as a fraud, regardless of intent, people would work harder to verify their family lore.

How is he different from Elizabeth Warren? She also had family lore.

Thinking about Anishnaabe who support Isreal.

If that's their vision of #LandBack then Canada should be very concerned about them. It isn't my vision, but i don't support Isreal either.

LMAO
So, the film "Inconvenient Indian" was based on a novel written by a pretendian, and directed by another pretendian?
WTF?

King's books, many of which i have read and enjoyed, are conspicuously absent from Bad Indians Book Club.

In case you were wondering if this was something a lot of us already knew.

Years of him claiming but not seeking citizenship. 🚩🚩🚩

Curious what this is going to do to various syllabi and lists that have his books on them.

At least he isn't disputing it.
