There’s still official silence from Labour over a week later.
I would urge allies voting and lending support in the next election to consider that NZ Greens and Te Pāti Māori officially stood up for our trans whānau - and didn’t hesitate.
When there’s silence, it’s important to ask who that serves.
Great to see this official statement from NZ Greens 🏳️‍⚧️

Unexpected AANZCA highlights: kangaroos on campus, baby pukekos, passionate debates about Chappell Roan, meeting Bluesky mutuals irl, and the "Gaming Culture & Narratives" panel (probably my favourite session of the entire conference).

Third (and final) conference presentation for November this afternoon. I'll be talking briefly about the incredible (and interactive!!) FAFSWAG Vogue documentary. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, it's free to access here: fafswagvogue.com

It took two bus trips and a 60 minute walk in 27 degree heat but I made it to BIRD WORLD

I can tell I've hit my 30s because the most exciting part of international travel is new birds

It also fucking sucks that so many people on the Left(s) refuse to understand anti-fatness as a system of oppression, and fat liberation as a legitimate anti-oppression movement.

It sucks, because it's all connected, and if you don't see this part, you don't have a clear understanding of the whole.

Day one in Australia and I have seen three bin chickens, two horrifying spiders, and one shirtless man in the mall. Feels like a really well rounded introduction to the country.

I've made it to Australia for the upcoming AANZCA conference, but I might still be stuck in the airport by Tuesday because AirNZ is holding everyone's luggage hostage.

The Cass Review is anything BUT "independant".

Anyone using it as such to justify decisions about gender-affirming care, cannot be taken seriously. That includes this fucked govt right now.

Here's a report on the review, published recently in the Medical Journal of Australia:
Cass Review does not guide care for trans young people

I had the privilege of presenting at two conferences this past week and it reminded me how important community is—particularly for marginalised scholars. Academia can be really isolating without institutional support and getting the chance to spend time with other queer ECRs felt so rejuvenating.

Just a note to say that @rebeccamatthews.bsky.social didn’t get a chair role. Ray did.
This is the standardised response you're likely to get. Sure, you cannot control the result of Ray Chung being re elected. But what is your plan to make women feel safer in politics in Wellington? Because you're not going to be subjected to racist misogynist abuse (out of sight /mind). #nzpol

Here's some good news: when we harness trained our indoor cat so she could go on little walkies outside, it turns out we also trained her to wear Halloween costumes that are harness shaped.

Mouse's greatest fears are:

1. Weather
2. Vacuum (tiny indoor weather)
3. Rain pants (weather adjacent)

I'm heading to Brisbane/Sunshine Coast for a conference late Nov/early Dec. Anyone have any recs for places to eat/visit while I'm in the area? I'm limited to public transport but very good at walking (and already made plans to pat wombats, the #1 priority of any Australia visit).

Our online roundtable about trans screen media is tomorrow! Can't yet confirm if the cat will make an appearance, but the chance of her popping up during a Zoom call is never zero.
