Tēnā koutou katoa,
Now that Bluesky has video, thought I'd do quick introduction in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) for fellow Deaf folk.

My name is Jasmin, I'm Deaf, live here in Aotearoa NZ.

I grew up mainstreamed, oral, NZSL is my second language.

The leadership I would like to see is one that doesn’t think it’s a win to deliver what people should already have to survive.
The leadership I would like to see knows the opportunity is in what people need to move beyond surviving, into thriving.
That’s the job - and it should show up in policy.

Aspirational, inspiring leadership looks like refusing to equivocate on the absolute bare minimums for people to survive.
It looks like immediately backing vulnerable communities instead of refusing to out of fear of antagonising a base that doesn’t exist.
It’s getting out of the middle of the road.

There’s still official silence from Labour over a week later.
I would urge allies voting and lending support in the next election to consider that NZ Greens and Te Pāti Māori officially stood up for our trans whānau - and didn’t hesitate.
When there’s silence, it’s important to ask who that serves.
Great to see this official statement from NZ Greens 🏳️‍⚧️

Labour have been gifted opportunity by PATHA releasing gender affirming care guidelines, and still haven't said anything (AS A PARTY) to support human rights of trans people

If you're not pushing back on the National coalition then you're helping them along

Te Whatu Ora have been told to publish updated guidelines with references to puberty suppression removed. We declined to write this update, because that’s not clinical guidance - not when the best practice option is being made illegal. We won’t compromise on the wellbeing of our communities.

For context, these were due to be published in March 2025. The NZ govt prevented their publication because they intended to ban puberty blockers and the guidelines show they are safe, effective, and standard care internationally. Today they were released in an OIA putting them in the public domain.
In some good news, today PATHA has finally been able to release the 2025 Guidelines for Gender Affirming Care in Aotearoa New Zealand. You can read them here: patha.nz/resources-an...

This is important and significant. These are the guidelines that were submitted and agreed before political interference. The ones that should have been published.

PATHA have taken a stand of not having their name used to give credence to the rewritten ones, and released the correct ones.

Hey, anyone who works in a library in Aotearoa Te Waipounamu - there's books mentioned in some of the resource sections at end of chapters. If your library doesn't have already, could be worth suggesting? Support your local trans community + healthcare professionals to be able to offer booklist

The fact that this happened while everyone is here at AusPATH is too good. I got to run down a conference centre hallway yelling at the AusPATH president “THEY RELEASED THE GUIDELINES”

So much celebrating.

Appreciate the mahi gone in to make it as easily understood as possible - it's for health professionals & there is jargon - also a fair part of it that's just bloody good resource/awareness
