I think I need a Bluesky break. I need to turn my efforts toward other venues for a bit. You can still find me elsewhere if you’re interested—or follow my art blog using RSS.

Another favor to ask on a research project. We're wrapping up a large project on AI music. We need folks to participate in a short 10 min quiz to test your ability to distinguish between AI music & human music. Especially looking for help from musicians!

Occasionally we get tiny Goldcrests in the garden, hunting for insects amongst the evergreens. They’re resident in Britain, but some Goldcrests cross the North Sea to escape the harsher continental winters; people used to believe they rode on the backs of migrating Woodcocks. (watercolour)

What I love about the wind is that, though I can't see it, touch it, put it in my pocket, I very much feel it, and know that it is real.

I think I've finally reached the point where I think twice about reading books in an unfinished series. I used to chomp at the bit waiting for sequels. But now…

Now I’m old. I don’t trust the authors to be done with the story by the time I die. Nor the pressure required by publishers to have them.

It's #PenguinAwarenessDay 🐧🎉

This year I wanted to do the second smallest penguin, the Galapagos Penguin! Endemic to the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. The cool waters of the Humboldt allow it to survive despite the tropical latitude.

Did this last year, have repeated it for 2026:

15 SFF books centring queer dudes coming out this year that I have my eye on. Feels like a bit of an uptick from last year, happily!

(Thumbnail is a free stock image for "gay couple reading" lol).
Queer dude SFF to look forward to in 2026
Tentatively encouraging - a modest upswing?

New: Yesterday the Administration filed notice to appeal a recent decision in federal court which halted actions to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

IMLS grants are still in place while the court hears the appeal. The appeals process will take time. 1/2

This morning has been a lot.

Got a request to do a commission piece, and I don’t do commissions. But this deeply personal subject matter literally wrecked me. He’s a local older gentleman, who visited my art booth this last year, and his request sent me into crying jags all morning.

I’m doing it.

This is it right here... the customers you might lose by being yourself were not your customers to begin with. They were the customers of someone they assumed you were. If you think I'm a sweet old lady from stumbling across one of my more whimsical posts, you're in for a rude awakening lmao...
I had a guy at a convention once ask me whether I was worried I might lose customers by having a huge pride flag over my table.

"I fucking hope so," I said.
Begging baby authors to realize this.
Posting like you're on Linkedin or only about stuff related to your writing/genre is soul-sucking. Just be yourself.
Also, scare off people who aren't your audience.

Ok, here's a very old one but one of my favorite insects and people always seem to get a kick out of the flying shrimp. Bonus inspiration photo taken by me in comment!

Volunteering today for art check-in at my local art co-op gallery for the next show. I have a lot of fun doing it. It gets me out of my head. I get to interact with real people who are my fellow artists.

Should be a good day!
