The ibus version in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is broken and should be updated.
We can't fix this issue until Ubuntu 24.04 LTS gets a fixed ibus - just upgrading from the unstable 1.5.29-rc2 used in 24.04 to 1.60 fixes it.
