like my occasional reminder that if JD Vance cared about Appalachia, he wouldn’t have written an elegy—a lament for the dead
worst forest/trees problem in generations is that a canto is A SECTION OF A LONG POEM. THAT'S IT. YOU DIDN'T WRITE A CANTO BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THE WORD LOOKED COOL ON YOUR MEMOIR. CANTOS ARE POEMS. THAT LANGUAGE IS DYNAMIC DOES NOT MAKE YOUR SLAMBOOK A CANTO AMERICAN OR OTHERWISE

And an important reminder that even when the advance is extremely cute, the way it's doled out is very often still not conducive to, like, surviving.
Extremely accurate thread on how book finances work for trade published authors #BookSky

tl;dr it’s not a lot of money per effort year and buying our books at indies makes a material, positive difference
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

Republicans will blame Democrats for the shooter. Don't let them.

Democrats:
- allowed Afghans to seek refuge after aiding the U.S. and fleeing the Taliban

Republicans:
- approved shooter's refugee status in April 2025
- allowed shooter to access a gun
- placed NG soldiers in the line of fire

IMO the weird exception some supposed leftists seem to make for condemning-the-theft-of-labor-except-art-lol-steal-that-shit is just a weird intersection with puritan "if you enjoy yourself, it's not a real job" brainworms.

"fun" job = member of the leisure class (ROFL) = fair game. Somehow.
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

JFC. The way things are now I would never be able to sustain myself on writing alone. Calling creators "petite bourgeoisie" is glaringly ignorant.

I hope that this doesn't just become about "Nuzzi is bad" but fosters a wider recognition that our culture of political journalism that didn't just tolerate her, but promoted and celebrated her even after the allegations were known, is rotten to the core and has been for a long time.
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit

If writing is so easy why do people argue that they can’t do it without the pablumatic verbiage extruder

And if it’s so difficult then why do people think it’s not labour and writers are not workers

Fascinated by how many are mad at me for not liking a movie I say I quite like in the first five words of this post. Don't blame me that there are haters! I just made you aware of them!
I quite like Glass Onion, which I realize is BLASPHEMY to some, but I find its presentation of our glossy dystopia to be closer to the mark than most other movies made of late.
It's also bleakly funny that even in 2022 I thought it was laying it on awful thick about tech bro douches, but if anything Norton's character is way too aware of other people as a concept and is at least attempting to fake an interesting inner life.

I love this so much.
When I went home to Mississippi last week, a Black farmer welcomed folks to pick greens from his land for free. It made me wonder whether other communities across the country were also giving back ahead of the holiday.

The answer: yes, they are.

For those who asked, three things:
1. This is most likely just asking the currently engaged states to, cumulatively, send 500 more troops. Under the current agreements, that could be done.
2. The ruling from Judge Cobb is stayed by her, so it's not in effect currently. So, more troops could come.

Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.

A little extra from the PNW adventures last week: SIL was kind enough to snap some photos of me wearing the Lorelei pullover. Natural cloudy light = the best for showing off the color. (Also, if it looks good on me, it'll probably look good on you too.)

LIBRARIES MAKE BOOKS ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, she shouts, apparently inaudibly

WHY DO THESE "YOU'RE A CLASS TRAITOR" PEOPLE KEEP PRETENDING LIBRARIES DON'T EXIST?

ARE THEY CLASS TRAITORS WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN LIBRARIES?
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

I've made about $17k all year, INCLUDING my adjunct teaching job.

There is this idea that anyone working in the arts has wealthy family help, and sure some do, but a lot of us are simply poor. If you enjoy someone's work please pay them for it. It is not greedy to want to be paid for your labor.
