You guys win. You got me. I guess I'll go off and grift somewhere else. It was a fun grift while it lasted.
Calling them out on bad business, unprofessional behavior, malfeasance, etc isn’t “bullying”. It’s protecting your peers.

Example: EDE Bell / Chris Bell / Athis Arts claim they’re being “bullied” because “conspiracy”. No, you’re being called out because you’re allegedly grifting, toxic amateurs.
Cosigned 💯.

See also: book publishing, chapbook publishing, audiobook publishing, etc.

If you are publishing someone else’s work for profit then it ain’t a hobby, no matter what your intention. It’s a business. Treat it accordingly, and warn your peers about those who don’t.

I'm saddened to see that the current head of the Gen Con Writers Symposium piling on attacking Emily. As Maurice is well aware, Emily was brought on as a disabled person tasked with helping make the GCWS a more welcoming place to those with neurodivergences. Unfortunately, GCWS is not a safe space.

I can’t speak for the entire Jewish community, but personally I have been watching many of y’all under-react to ICE actions for the last year and suddenly understanding in a whole new way how my family ended up being rounded up and massacred in camps and y’all should think on that.
ICE has murdered THIRTY TWO PEOPLE in detention centers. Four in the last week.

Do you want this to stop?

Or do you want this to stop with the racial, social hierarchy intact ?

Because those are two different goals and only one is attainable

The Vice President of the U.S. just defamed Renee Good, calling her brainwashed; she was murdered I.C.E. yesterday.

We're a fascist nation, now. It's simply a fact.

It didn't have to be this way. But White America couldn't bring themselves to vote for the sitting VP, because she was a Black Woman.

White Men, do better than this. If someone tells you that you are causing harm, listen. And if you disagree, use your privilege to de-escalate and then reflect on your disagreement to see if you can make a positive change.
Go through my past posts then come back and apologize.

They weren't protecting the Writers Symposium -- they were protecting Gen Con so they don't lose their access to the Writers Symposium (some white men have told me this directly).

I tried protecting the Writers Symposium.
Some of us had plans to build a new, sustainable, inclusive con from the ground up, but people went all-in on protecting the Writers Symposium instead.

This would be very much not easy without the power structure, but it could be done, and joyfully, with enough people who wanted it.
I don’t think the publishing industry can be reformed from the inside. It can’t be decolonized. It can’t survive without exploitation, and the myth of scarcity.

I’m not interested in changing it. I want an alternative we build together. Now you’re talking.

Something I've been saying for years but feels more relevant now.

Get businesses, publishers, etc - to share their values on their website.

I should probably refine this, but anyway, ours ( @atthisarts.com ) are listed and have been a while:
About Atthis Arts
About our press, our stories, and our values.

Just think if the genre community came together and organized for UBI/UHC they same way they organized against SFWA. UBI/UHC would do a hell of a lot more good to all writers (in countries with UBI) than a few Nebulas would ever do.

And GenAI gives us the legitimate argument for it.

This is simply classism.

Yes I know he disclaims "" "good" "" schools.

But I read with my kids until they were adults. I taught them that reading was something they wanted to do. I didn't let schools, good or bad, put them off or limit their horizons.

I worked 1 job & got home in time to do so...
One major problem, bluntly, is that lots of folks can't distinguish between good writing and poor writing. This is about education, not intelligence: they could learn the difference, but it's frequently not taught, even in "good" schools. This is ultimately a competitive disadvantage for them.
it's so wild that people conflate quickness with quality so they think chatGPT writing a wall of text in 10 seconds means it's good writing.

"One major problem, bluntly, is that lots of folks can't distinguish between good writing and poor writing."

JESUS. Taken out of context this is racist. Taken in context, it is just plain an awful statement.

GenAI gives us the perfect justification why we need UBI and UHC. Consider focusing some of your rage that direction. UBI/UHC would fix a lot of the inequities plaguing genre.

One of these days I'll tell you about my experience with SFWA and my immigration process. (It won't be today because I have a bunch of things to do before Shabbes.)

But I feel like how SFWA treated Palestinian and Ukrainian writers more recently should be a reason enough to quit.

We all see this as wrong

Right?

We see how having Black women be present but silent so bad

But how many folks will unironically watch an entire thread of white people discuss something and not answer a single question from a Black person…

But say nothing because “liberal”
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

One of the reasons universal basic income is so important is how it can directly distribute a share of GDP growth instead of relying on jobs to do it. Another reason UBI is important is because it increases bargaining power for everyone, which in turn will empower unions and function as strike pay.
Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

Not sure if Jason is referring to those in genre fiction with "power and money", but he sure could be. Try promoting 2 bipoc women as GoH to bring new ideas into a major gaming convention and see what happens. Actually, I'm pretty sure he isn't referring to genre fiction, too bad.
This column on Vox is the biggest pile of steaming AI crap I've seen this year. Human's aren't running out of ideas. Instead, those with power and money don't want to listen to ideas that threaten their power and money.

Ideas are plentiful. Putting those ideas into action is the hard part.
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?
