Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Pretty affordable as far as Broadway goes! And yeah, Patrick Wilson was talking about wanting to adapt this for a really long time (I'd forgotten he was in the Phantom of the Opera movie so has musical theater roots), and everything they said made me feel really good about it.

I also bought tickets, lol. They played us a song they just released and the lead did a live performance, and I can tell the producers and director are coming at it from the right place. (Also, the director won the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical in 2023 and 2025, so that's pretty legit.)

I did not realize Akira Yamaoka was doing the score for Return to Silent Hill! They just showed a package at this panel about the sound design (with some footage), and it *looks* good (and will obviously sound good). #NYCC

Michael Arden is directing, and the producers have apparently wanted to make this for literal decades, so it feels much less like it's riding the wave of film-to-musical adaptations than that this is the time where it can actually get made. #NYCC

At the panel for The Lost Boys musical, and Patrick Wilson (a producer on the show) just referred to the relationship between the three central characters as "a love story", so I am hopeful the subtext may be more textual in this version. #NYCC
