booktok is off the goop man wym you consider harry potter LITERARY FANTASY
i read theory and i critically engage with literature bc i owe it to my community (the Black Diaspora, the Caribbean, islanders) to be a better person in order to work towards our liberation. it is out of love for my peoples that i do this
it’s also disingenuous to read theory (shallowly) then lord that knowledge over other people. theory and the analysis of it should not be reduced to dunks or social/cultural capital. why would you read it only to feel superior to people who may not even have access to it?
why is your engagement with theory so shallow that you can only name people who have harmful politics? decolonizing your tbr and theory should not mean engaging with works by ppl deeply entrenched in the structures and institutions that oppress and exploit us
why do you read theory? why do you “critically” engage with literature? is it just to dunk on people who may not have the resources you do? why are you not approaching theory and lit as a form of grappling and growth with your own prejudices and ideologies?
this sc succinctly demonstrates the issues with how theory and literature are currently approached. what is it you seek to gain by namedropping theorists and people you perceive to be radical while doing nothing to engage with and help community
the concept of decolonizing your tbr by reading an author incapable of class analysis, a transphobe, and a misogynist

the 70s, 80s, and early aughts in particular all had really impactful and new ideas of what SF could be. being reductive and so narrow in your scope does a disservice to the discussion of the genre’s history and trajectory
if you’re going to talk about the change in SF and go “well the questions of the 50s are no longer pertinent” i’m gonna wonder if you’ve read anything in the 6 decades since
