The whole piece is excellent but these paragraphs here are absolute bangers. And boy but it’s refreshing to see the New Yorker critique centrist views (here’s the archived version if you haven’t got a subscription: archive.ph/UNdFj).

Is it just me, or does 12-year-old Felix Mendelssohn look like when Tina Fey plays young Liz Lemon in a flashbak?

hah. should have known @theradr.bsky.social already broke this down (from a very different angle, but to the same interpretive end, if i'm allowed that confidence!) years ago, in a newsletter.

As someone who works at a museum with Rockwells in its collection, you don't mess with the Rockwell Foundation.

8 of the 9 members of the Fellowship of the Ring become immigrants at some point in their lives. You can spin the Lord of the Rings in a lot of different ways, but there's no case for it being anti-immigration.
DHS just posted a Lord of the Rings meme as an appeal to join ICE

Actually the modern political landscape is just strewn with people like this who sort of careen through different identities looking for something that makes them feel less hollow, looking for something to believe in

This is also true about a lot of Christians. The point for them is not about changing the world for the better. It's about feeling superior to everyone else. You can excuse any bad behavior if you think that you're part of a small group of God's special favorites.
Honestly, the response has continued to convince me that so much of the online left is about feeling superior to normies and not about actual change
like, the People are actually rising up and y’all hate it
you didn’t want change or solidarity, you just wanted to feel more enlightened than others

I think some of the people on social media sneering at the No Kings protesters are just mad that those normies with signs are way better shitposters than they are

Smoking kills half a million Americans each year. Second-hand smoke alone kills as many Americans a year as guns (which should also be highly regulated, but that's not a niche stance).

Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
