A nice shift in perceived colour between central and peripheral vision. The fixated disc looks purple while the others look blue.

The effect presumably comes from the absence of S-cones in the fovea.

This dress reflects the shrinking bulk in the back of dresses as popularity for large bustles faded. By the 1890s, bustles had pretty much disappeared, as they interfered with the active lifestyle of the "modern woman" of the era.
