Dinner crew: feast your eyes upon this as you eat, like an iPad kid!
Hello friends! In an enraging new form of technological backtalk, my blog is acting real weird & not displaying today's new post on the front page, though it is searchable. So here it is!

Fascinating thread on sales, economic trends, industry trends, passion projects, fees... This is worth five minutes of your day if you're a creative, if you're a self-publisher or publisher of any sort, or if you're planning a project for release. Hat off to Chris for the transparency and analysis.
It's 9pm, which means two things: I'm meant to be logging off for the night, and in 3 hours The Mouth Of Winter will have been live for 24 hours.

I've been looking at the numbers from my previous advent calendars and I thought I'd write a short (or maybe not so short) thread with some thoughts.

Lunch crew: I apologize for this article not appearing on the front page of my blog for some reason I will have to investigate later 😅

I the meantime, click the link below and take a look at some Halflings, Hobbits and (if you're playing LL 2.0 already) Hobfolk!

Adding to this; you don't have to compromise quality for time, if you're thoughtful about it. Be stragetic with the squiggles and colors. There is a lot of power in implied details, shape/composition, lineweight, contrast, and a good establishing shot.
if you're one person making a comic by yourself, don't treat yourself like you should function on the same level as comics that have multiple people working on them. your backgrounds can be squiggles and colors.

allow yourself room to be abstract with details and give yourself some grace

I implore ANYONE interested in a professional subject to track down that industry's trade publications.

I've learned more from product ads for specific fields in a single magazine than I have from weeks of my own research- you just don't know what you don't know 'till someone's selling it at you.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

From the vaults of my zine collection... Jim Coon's pin up art book from 2005. Jim had the good grace to warn us on the cover that there would be nudity! And god bless his heart, he delivered. I fucking love this.

Jim and I go way back to the United Fanzine Org in the mid-90s. Fun guy. #zines

Hodag remains among the most powerful artists you could bring to your work. He is a known quantity who offers speed, quality, and price - the man is operating on the trifecta.

Various Zine-whatevers are fast approaching in Q1 of 2026. Now might be a good time to give Hodag a look if you can.

AI creates an illusion of work, not work proper. It's not for writers, it's for people who want to 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯. It's not for creators, it's for people who want a portfolio or a container full of "content." It is opposite to human expression; it is simulacra. A plastic hamburger on a tray.
A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?
Execs are embracing AI more than their employees are, new research suggests
Research from HR software company Dayforce suggests that executives are leaning into AI far more than their employees.
