This is basically the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence…

Everyone could use a reminder that the idea behind our system of government is that we cede some of our power to it in exchange for it working on our behalf. When it stops doing that it becomes illegitimate and must be changed. The idea that the people can "betray" a government organ is perverse

In response to California passing a law limiting law enforcement officers' ability to conceal their identities, the president of the Peace Officers Research Association of California contends that police are not subject to democratic control.

Almost daily reminders why I cancelled my sub. "allegations" He said it! "Dems see a pattern of inflicting pain..." Anyone with two eyes to see can see that, not just Dems.

Yeah but if you're name is Thurl Ravenscroft, you get a free pass on most things.

HVAC is broken, again.

(My first entry was for historians, this one is for museum curators and collections managers)

I certainly don't have the connections he's looking for, but Silly Genius is hands down my favorite Richmond muralist, and we have a bunch of good ones in this town. Check him out.

Weird seeing your own writing quoted becuase in my case I was using an authorial voice to express how proslavery Christians imagined themselves and stripped out of context that makes it sound like *I* am endorsing that view which I am very much not.

p.s. Palmetto Day aka Carolina Day: the anniversary of the surprise victory of SC troops and militia over a British attempt to capture Charles Town just a week before Declaration of Independence. A worthy anniversary, indeed, and a convenient one if you don't want folks thinking about independence.

Yesterday read abt how Early Republic SCn's downplayed Independence Day so enslaved people wouldn't get any ideas & played up Palmetto Day (June 28) instead. It's still this way (My exhibit opens June 28 for a reason).

This whiteness was intentional and will remain so until we face this fact.

Super easy to use the mapgl package and @oldinsurancemaps.net to compare 1886 Richmond, VA to today in #rstats. The site of Gallego Mills, the ruins of which became an iconic photo after the fall of Richmond in the American Civil War, is now an office building and freeway.

The day of/after the Montgomery Boat Brawl on Twitter was probably the funniest and best thing that I've ever experienced as an American alive at this point in time. I really felt a part of something greater than me for a minute.
